Online Master's in Data Analytics and Data Science Programs in Wisconsin

There are currently two schools offering online master’s in analytics program in the state of Wisconsin: University of Wisconsin–Extension, and University of Wisconsin–Madison. Both schools are part of the University of Wisconsin system, but the programs are offered separately and have different curricular focuses. The online Master of Science in Data Science (MS-DS) degree offered by University of Wisconsin–Extension targets proficiencies in mathematics, statistics, and computer science, and provides training in the management and communications skills used by data scientists in professional settings. It draws on faculty from six University of Wisconsin system schools, and utilizes an online learning platform that supports asynchronous instruction. The program has a structured sequence of courses and it culminates in a data science capstone project. It is designed to accommodate full-time students, who can complete the requirements in four semesters (16 months), and part-time students, who may take up to four years to graduate. The MS-DS program accepts applications for three start dates per year, in the fall, spring, and summer semesters.

The University of Wisconsin–Madison offers an online Master of Engineering: Engineering Data Analytics program through the school’s Department of Engineering and Professional Development. It features a data analytics curriculum that focuses on the application of advanced computer technologies in data mining, data management, and data-driven problem solving. The program utilizes a learning management system that supports a mixture of synchronous and asynchronous instruction, so there are scheduled online class meetings as well as on-demand video lectures. This is a part-time program that can be completed in two years.

In addition to the two University of Wisconsin schools that offer online master’s in analytics programs, there are 71 out-of-state schools offering a total of 89 such programs that accept applicants from Wisconsin. Most of these out-of-state schools – 58 of the 71 – offer programs that are 100% online. The other 13 schools have online programs that require no more than two campus visits per year. Tuition for out-of-state online students is often the same as that for in-state students. However, prospective applicants should confirm total costs with each school before applying.
