Online Master's in Data Analytics and Data Science Programs in Iowa

There is currently one school in the state of Iowa offering an online master’s in analytics program: Iowa State University (ISU). The Ivy College of Business at ISU offers an online Master of Business Analytics program that targets the IT tools and interpretive skills that are used to make data-driven decisions and assessments in the business world. The program is built around six required courses in core business analytics proficiencies, including a capstone project. It also allows students to choose four electives in advanced analytics subjects like multivariate statistics, algorithm design, and data visualization. While the majority of the coursework is online, ISU requires that students attend three weeklong, campus-based immersion sessions, which are held at the beginning, middle, and end of the program.

ISU’s online Master of Business Analytics program is designed for students who have a minimum of two years of professional experience in the field of data analytics. It is a part-time program that typically takes 21 months to complete. The program admits a cohort of students once a year, in the summer, and those students attend an on-campus initiation session to begin the coursework and to meet with instructors and classmates. The cohort then progress sequentially through the core coursework as a group, utilizing an online learning management platform that supports synchronous instruction. This means that students must be present online at specific times to participate in weekly lectures and discussions.

ISU’s Ivy College of Business has designed a multidisciplinary data analytics curriculum that draws on the university’s assets in the areas of computer science, electrical and computer engineering, statistics, and industrial and manufacturing systems engineering. The campus-based sessions addresses business-oriented subjects like teambuilding, leadership, and marketing analytics. The online coursework targets the various data information technology systems and analytics methodologies used to solve problems and improve efficiency in the business world. Each student must then demonstrate his or her ability to analyze real-world data using advanced tools and technologies in a capstone project that culminates in a final, weeklong campus immersion session.
