Online Master's in Data Analytics and Data Science Programs in Pennsylvania

In the state of Pennsylvania there are currently eight schools offering online master’s in analytics programs: Carnegie Mellon University; Harrisburg University of Science and Technology; Pennsylvania State University (Penn State); Robert Morris University; Saint Joseph’s University; Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania; The University of Scranton; and Villanova University. Pennsylvania Online Master’s in Analytics Programs

The analytics program at Carnegie Mellon University is offered through the Heinz College School of Information Systems & Management. In addition to its core Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT) curriculum, it has Business Intelligence and Data Analytics (BIDA) concentration that allows students to focus on either data analytics or business intelligence coursework by choosing electives in those subject areas. This is a part-time program, designed for students with a minimum of three years of relevant work experience. It utilizes asynchronous instruction and can be completed in two-to-three years, depending on the number of courses taken per semester. The MSIT program accepts applications for start dates in the fall, spring, and summer semesters.

Harrisburg University of Science and Technology offers an online Master of Science in Analytics program that targets data mining technologies and their business applications. It generally takes part-time students two years, or six semesters, to complete the program. Courses are taught synchronously, which means students must be present online for real-time lectures and discussions. While there are no required campus visits, students have the option of attending monthly weekend sessions on campus. The program has six starts dates per year.

Through its World Campus distance learning initiative, Penn State University offers an online Master of Professional Studies (MPS) in Data Analytics that has an optional Business Analytics track. OnlineEducation.com classifies the MPS in Data Analytics as a business intelligence program, based on its coursework. The Business Analytics track is classified as a data analytics program. Students in the MPS in Data Analytics program can expect to complete the requirements in two years of part-time enrollment, which is also true of the Business Analytics track. Courses are taught asynchronously, which gives students on-demand access to lectures and course materials. The program admits new applicants twice a year, for the fall and spring semesters.

The School of Communications and Information Systems at Robert Morris University offers an online Master of Science in Data Analytics program that gives students the option of choosing from two concentration areas: Data Analytics and Enterprise Systems. Both concentrations are classified by OnlineEducation.com as master’s in data analytics programs. Students can complete the requirements in two years by taking one course per eight-week session. Robert Morris University utilizes asynchronous instruction for its online courses and accepts applicants for the MS in Data Analytics program five times per year, in August, October, January, March and May.

Saint Joseph’s University offers an online Master of Science in Business Intelligence and Analytics (MSBIA) program through its Erivan K. Haub School of Business. Students who enroll in one course per semester can expect to complete the program in 20-24 months. Saint Joseph’s University utilizes an online learning platform that supports real-time, synchronous instruction, although some lectures and course materials are available on-demand, 24-7. The program has three starts dates per years, in September, January, and May.

Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania offers an online Master of Science in Data Analytics (MSDA) that targets the business and organizational applications of quantitative analytics tools and technologies. The program can be completed in as few as ten months by full-time students. Those who opt for part-time enrollment generally graduate in two years. The online MSDA program utilizes asynchronous instruction and has one start date per year, in the fall.

The University of Scranton offers an online Master of Science (MS) in Business Analytics program through the Arthur J. Kania School of Management with a curriculum that focuses on the business applications of data analytics tools and technologies. All of the program’s coursework is offered online via asynchronous instruction, and students can opt to enroll in the program on a full-time or a part-time basis, depending on their preference. Students who enroll full-time can complete the program’s 30 credits of graduate coursework in 18 months. The University of Scranton accepts applicants for admission to the program three times per year, in the fall, spring, and summer.

The Villanova School of Business and the Center for Business Analytics at Villanova University offers an online Master of Science in Analytics (MSA) program that focuses on big data technologies and proficiencies in the area of business analytics. The program uses a cohort model for online learning, which means that students progress through the program as a group, taking online courses that include both synchronous and asynchronous elements. Students who take one or two classes each quarter can complete the program in 20 months. The program admits new applicants for two start dates per years, in the fall and in the spring.

There are currently 69 out-of-state schools offering 85 online master’s in analytics programs that accept applicants from Pennsylvania. These programs may be of particular interest to students who are interested in exploring online programs in data science, as well as additional programs in data analytics and business intelligence. Most of these out-of-state schools – 55 of the 69 – do not require any campus visits. The other 14 schools have online programs that require no more than two campus visits per year.
