Online Master's in Data Analytics and Data Science Programs in Indiana

There are currently four schools with online master’s in analytics program in the state of Indiana: Indiana University; Indiana University Bloomington; Purdue University – Purdue Polytechnic Institute; and Saint Mary’s College. Based on OnlineEducation.com’s classifications, Indiana University and Purdue University offer online master’s in data analytics programs, while Indiana University Bloomington and Saint Mary’s College offer online master’s in data science programs. Indiana University and Saint Mary’s College require online students to attend a limited number of on-campus sessions, while Indiana University Bloomington and Purdue University offer programs that do not require any campus visits during the program.

Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business offers an online Master of Science in Business Analytics that targets applications of analytics techniques and technologies in marketing and business management. The program begins with Kelley Connect Week, a campus-based introductory session that includes a Topics in Directed Business Interaction class, and gives students the opportunity to interact with faculty and classmates. The rest of the coursework is conducted online using a combination of synchronous and asynchronous instruction. This means that some lectures and discussions are conducted and streamed at scheduled times, while others are available on-demand, 24-7.

The MS in Business Analytics offered by the Kelley School of Business can be completed in 15 months of full-time enrollment. Students typically follow a sequence of two classes per term for five terms. However, students have up to five years to finish the requirements through part-time enrollment. There are two start dates per year, in the fall and in the spring.

The School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering at Indiana University Bloomington offers an online Master of Science in Data Science degree program that targets technical proficiencies in financial forecasting, health informatics, and bioinformatics. The program does not require any on-campus sessions, and utilizes an online learning platform that gives students on-demand access to recorded lectures and other course materials.

Students who enroll full-time in Indiana University Bloomington’s MS in Data Science program can graduate in approximately a year and half. Students who prefer part-time enrollment have up to five years to complete the requirements. The program has one start date per year, in the fall.

Purdue Polytechnic Institute, which is part of Purdue University, offers an online Master of Science in Information Technology with a concentration in Business Analysis (ITBA) through its Center for Professional Studies. This is a master’s in data analytics program with a curricular focus on developing, deploying, and managing IT systems and analytics technologies. It includes training designed to prepare students for the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) professional certifications in analytics.

Purdue Polytechnic Institute utilizes asynchronous instruction, which allows students to view videotaped lectures and complete assignments at any time of the day. Online discussion boards and electronic messaging platforms are used to facilitate interactions with other students and with instructors. The program is designed for part-time students, who can expect to complete the degree in two-to-three years. Applications are accepted for start dates in the fall and in the spring.

Saint Mary’s College offers an online Master of Science in Data Science program grounded in the mathematical and statistical foundations of data mining, database design, and algorithmic computing, as well as in data visualization techniques and technical writing skills integral to the practice of data science. The curriculum includes a master’s thesis or master’s practicum requirement.

The MS in Data Science program at Saint Mary’s College can be completed in five or six semesters (20-24 months) by students who enroll in two courses per semester. It requires attendance at two weekend-long, campus-based immersion sessions, in August of the first and second years of the program. The rest of the coursework is delivered online, using a combination of synchronous and asynchronous instruction. Applicants are accepted for enrollment in the fall.

There are currently an additional 90 online master’s in analytics programs offered by 71 out-of-state schools that accept applicants from the state of Indiana. Out-of-state online students often pay the same tuition rates as in-state students for these programs; however, some universities do charge different tuition rates based on a student’s state of residence.
