The New Mexico Department of Higher Education oversees seven degree-granting public colleges and universities that have bachelor’s and graduate programs, including master’s programs that are offered on campus, online, and in hybrid formats that combine online instruction with on-campus classes. Most of New Mexico’s public colleges and universities are active in offering online courses and degree programs, and many have online master’s programs.

Regional Out-of-State Schools That Offer Online Master’s Programs
One of the advantages of online learning is that it allows students who cannot or would prefer not to relocate or commute in order to attend campus-based classes a more convenient means of earning a master’s degree. Online master’s programs provide New Mexico residents who are interested in pursuing master’s-level training in their field with access to programs offered by out-of-state schools, including schools in neighboring and regional states.
Arizona State University (ASU) is one such school. A publicly funded university with five campuses in the Phoenix metropolitan area, ASU offers more than 150 undergraduate and graduate degree programs through ASU Online. Among these programs are online master’s programs in business analytics, business journalism, computer science, criminal justice, cybersecurity, emergency management, English, health informatics, history, legal studies, nutrition, psychology, regulatory science, social work, and sustainability.
The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) is one of the schools in the University of Texas System (UT System) offering online master’s programs. UT Dallas offers programs through its School of Economic, Political, and Policy Sciences, and through its Jindal School of Management. Online Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) Programs in New Mexico
Four of New Mexico’s state universities offer online Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs, including New Mexico State University (NMSU), Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU), New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU), and Western New Mexico University (WNMU). NMHU Online offers a cohort-based distance MBA program that has synchronous classes one night per week and two campus-based sessions that students are required to attend during the two years it takes to complete the program. All of NMSU’s core MBA courses are offered online, as are many of the program’s electives. Students who would like to complete an MBA specialization in Agribusiness, Finance, Information Systems, or Public Utility Regulation through NMHU Online may be able to do so through careful scheduling of courses.
ENMU offers a ten-course, 30-credit online MBA program with a general business curriculum and an optional Accounting specialization. The program can be completed in as few as 12 months. NMHU has a campus-based MBA program that allows students who would prefer to complete their degree online to do so through streamed lectures and virtual classroom sessions. The NMHU program offers concentrations in: Accounting; Entrepreneurship; Finance; International Business; Human Resource Management; and Management.
WNMU has a 12-course online MBA program that is designed for students who have an undergraduate degree in business. ASU Online offers an MBA program with four specialization options: Finance; International Business; Marketing; and Supply Chain Management. The 49-credit program is designed to be completed in 24 months.

Online Master’s in Counseling Programs in New Mexico
New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) offers a Master of Arts (MA) in Counseling with five concentrations: Clinical Mental Health Counseling; Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling; Rehabilitation Counseling; Rehabilitation Counseling with a Specializations in Vocational Counseling; and School Counseling. The non-clinical Rehabilitation Counseling track is fully online and requires the completion of 48 credits of coursework. The Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling, and School Counseling concentrations each have a 60-credit curriculum, which includes an internship, a case presentation or professional paper, and several campus-based classes. The Rehabilitation Counseling with a Specialization in Vocational Evaluation track is 54 credits and requires a limited number of campus-based classes.
The University of the Southwest (USW) is another school in New Mexico that offers an online master’s in counseling program. The USW program is an online Master of Science (MS) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program that allows students to take electives in play therapy, Christian counseling, human sexuality, addiction counseling, crisis and trauma interventions, and psychopharmacology. USW also offers an online Master of Science in Education (MSE) program with a School Counseling specialization. Students in the School Counseling program must complete in-person practicums at public or private K-12 schools.
There are two out-of-state schools in Texas offering online master’s in counseling programs that New Mexico residents may want to explore. Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) in San Antonio offers an online MA in Counseling program with specializations in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling, and School Counseling. The Clinical Mental Health Counseling and the Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling specializations each have a 60-credit curriculum that takes between three and four years to complete. The School Counseling specialization has a 48-credit curriculum that can be completed in 2.5 years. Students in the OLLU program take all of their didactic courses online but must complete clinical hours at sites approved by the program.
Lamar University in Beaumont offers an online Master of Education (MEd) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program through its College of Education and Human Development. The program requires students to attend two campus-based seminars and to complete clinical hours at a program approved site. Lamar’s College of Education and Human Development also offers an online MEd in Counseling and Development program with two tracks: School Counseling; and Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling. The Counseling and Development program requires students to attend a five-day campus residency in Beaumont.
Note: In order to prepare students for eventual licensure in clinical, rehabilitation, and/or school counseling, online master’s in counseling programs require students to complete internships at sites that align with the program’s focus. New Mexico residents who are considering online programs offered by out-of-state schools may want to contact program representatives regarding internship placements prior to submitting applications in order to ensure that a convenient site can be found. In addition, New Mexico residents should review their state’s licensing requirements for professional counselors prior to applying to an out-of-state program. These requirements vary by state and some online programs may not provide the coursework and training required for licensure in New Mexico.
Online Master’s in Social Work (MSW) Programs in New Mexico
The School of Social Work at New Mexico State University (NMSU) offers a full-time online Master of Social Work (MSW) program that has an advanced generalist curriculum and that takes two years to complete. The advanced generalist curriculum provides training and instruction in both clinical and macro practice social work. Full-time enrollment in the program means completing four courses per semester while engaging in up to 24 hours of supervised field education per week in a clinical or macro practice setting.
Western New Mexico University (WNMU) offers a flexible MSW program that allows students to take courses online, on-campus, or through a mix of online and on-campus instruction. The WNMU program has an advanced generalist curriculum and enrollment plans that accommodate full-time and part-time students. Students in the program must complete four 225-hour field practicums in clinical and/or macro practice settings. In addition to offering a traditional MSW program, WNMU has an Advanced Standing MSW program for students who hold a bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW) from a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). The Advanced Standing track can be completed in as little as one year and requires just two 225-hour field practicums.
Among the out-of-state schools in the New Mexico region that offer online MSW programs are three Texas universities: Texas State University; Baylor University; and Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU). The School of Social Work at Texas State has an Advanced Practice Leadership MSW program that provides online training and instruction in macro and clinical practice social work. The program is offered on campus and online and has a part-time track that requires student to take two courses per semester and a full-time track that requires three courses per semester. Students who hold a BSW degree from a CSWE-approved program may be eligible for Texas State’s Advanced Standing program, which can be completed in four semesters. The traditional program takes seven semesters of full-time or 11 semesters of part-time enrollment to complete.
The Diana R. Garland School of Social Work at Baylor University offers an online MSW program that has separate tracks for macro/community practice and clinical practice social work. Students who opt for the clinical track can choose from two specializations: Physical and Mental Health; and Children and Families. The program has several enrollment options, including: full-time plans that allow students to complete their degree in 16 or 24 months; a part-time, 36-month option; and a 12-month Advanced Standing option for qualifying students who hold a BSW degree from a program accredited by the CSWE.
The Worden School of Social Services at OLLU has an online MSW program with a clinical focus and a curriculum that includes coursework designed to prepare students for social work practice in Hispanic communities. The program has a 57-credit traditional track and a 30-credit Advanced Standing track. The traditional track can be completed in a little over three years, while the Advanced Standing track has a completion plan that takes less than two years.
Note: Field education is an integral component of master’s-level training in clinical and macro practice social work. Students who are considering earning an MSW degree online may want to contact a program administrator about field placements prior to initiating the application process, particularly for programs that are offered by out-of-state schools. New Mexico residents should also be aware that licensing requirements for clinical social workers vary by state. Online Master’s in Education Programs in New Mexico
There are numerous types of online master’s in education and teaching program specializations offered by schools in New Mexico. For example, the University of New Mexico (UNM) has four online Master of Arts (MA) programs in education fields. These include an online MA in Educational Leadership program; an online MA in Elementary Education program; an online MA in Secondary Education program; and an online MA in Organization, Information, & Learning Sciences program with a Learning Officer concentration. The Educational Leadership program is designed for students who hold a bachelor’s degree in education. The Elementary and Secondary Education programs require applicants to hold a teaching license. The Learning Officer program is open to applicants who hold a bachelor’s degree in any field, and it does not require students to be licensed teachers.
New Mexico State University (NMSU) offers online MA programs in two educational specializations: Community College and University Administration; and Education and Design in Learning Technology. In addition, NMSU has an online Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program with a concentration in Spanish that is designed for licensed teachers, as well as an online Master of Music in Music Education program that is designed for teachers who hold an undergraduate degree in music.
Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) has a number of online master’s programs for licensed teachers and professional educators. ENMU’s programs include an online Master of Arts in Education (MAE) in Curriculum and Instruction program with an Elementary Education emphasis, and an online Master of Education (MEd) in Secondary Education program. ENMU also offers an online MEd in Pedagogy and Learning program that has seven specialization options: Bilingual Education; Educational Technology; Elementary Education; English as a Second Language (ESOL); Gifted Pedagogy; Reading/Literacy; and Special Education Pedagogy. In addition, ENMU has an online MEd in Reading and Literacy program; an online MEd in Education Technology program; an online Master of Education Administration program; and an online Master of Special Education program.
Through New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU), licensed teachers can earn an MA in Curriculum and Instruction online in a range of teaching specializations, including reading, technology, bilingual education, and early childhood education. The online Curriculum and Instruction master’s program can also be tailored to include training in specific subject areas, such as English, Spanish, history, chemistry, mathematics, and computer science.
Western New Mexico University (WNMU) has two online MAT programs: an online MAT program that is designed to prepare student who do not have a bachelor’s degree in education for licensure in the state of New Mexico; and an online MAT program that is designed to provide licensed teachers with professional development. Students in WNMU’s online MAT programs can choose to specialize in Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Reading Education, or Special Education. In addition, WNMU has an online MA in Educational Leadership program that is designed to prepare licensed teachers for administrative positions in K-12 schools.
The New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech) has an online Master of Science for Teachers (MST) program designed for students with a minimum of one year of K-12 teaching experience. The program offers specializations in Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, and Computer Science. Students in the program are invited to attend a two-week intensive summer session at New Mexico Tech but the summer intensive is not a requirement.
The College of Education at the University of the Southwest (USW) has four Master of Science in Education (MSE) programs that are offered online, including an online MSE in Teaching and Learning program with an Educational Leadership curriculum for P-12 teachers, and an online MSE in Educational Administration program designed for educators who are interested in pursuing an Educational Administrator license in New Mexico. In addition, USW offers online MSE programs in Educational Diagnostics and in Special Education.
Outside of New Mexico there are several schools in regional states that offer online master’s in education and teaching programs. Texas’s Sam Houston State University (SHSU), for example, has online MEd programs in Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Administration, Instructional Leadership, Instructional Systems Design and Technology, Reading and Language Arts, and Teaching ESOL. Oklahoma State University offers online MS programs in Educational Leadership Studies, Educational Technology, and Reading and Literacy Instruction. Finally, Colorado State University (CSU) offers an online Master of Natural Science Education program, as well as an online MEd in Education and Human Resource Studies program with three specializations: Adult Education and Training; Teacher Licensure; and Principal Licensure.
Note: Online master’s in education and teaching programs may require students to complete supervised teaching experiences at schools approved by the program. New Mexico residents who are considering online programs offered by out-of-state schools may want to consult with a program administrator regarding student teaching placements prior to submitting applications. Online Master’s in Accounting Programs in New Mexico
While there are currently no online master’s in accounting programs offered by schools in New Mexico, there are schools in the neighboring states of Texas, Colorado, and Oklahoma with online master’s in accounting programs that accept students from New Mexico. The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) has an online Master of Science (MS) in Accounting program that is offered in two formats: a Flex format that allows students to take courses at their own pace and graduate in two or more years; and a Cohort format with a set sequence of courses that students progress through in groups for the two years it takes to complete the curriculum.
Colorado State University (CSU) offers an online Master of Professional Accounting (MPAcc) program that consists of ten required courses and an optional internship. The internship is recommended for students who are enrolled in order to qualify to sit for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam. The CSU online MPAcc program is designed for students who hold an undergraduate degree in accounting or who have successfully completed college-level coursework equivalent to an undergraduate accounting major.
Oklahoma Christian University, a non-profit, private school located in Oklahoma City, offers an online Master of Accountancy (MAcc) program that can be completed in as few as 12 months by qualified students who hold a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Students who do not have an undergraduate degree in accounting may qualify for the program if they successfully complete 30 credits of college-level coursework in business and accounting topics.
Note: Eligibility to sit for the CPA exam and requirements for CPA licensure are determined by individual states. Specific eligibility requirements vary by state. It is thus advisable for New Mexico residents who intend to pursue CPA licensure upon completion of an online master’s program to review the state’s eligibility requirements prior to applying to a program offered by an out-of-state school.
Online Master’s in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Management Programs in New Mexico
There are three schools in New Mexico that offer online master’s in engineering programs, including programs in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and engineering management. The University of New Mexico (UNM) has an online Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) program with a Space Systems Engineering focus, as well as an online Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) program with a Space Systems Engineering focus. Both programs are designed for students who have a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field.
New Mexico State University (NMSU) offers an online Master of Science (MS) in Electrical Engineering program with specializations in: Computer Engineering; Communications & Signal Processing; and Photonics & Electromagnetics. In addition, the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech) has an online Master of Engineering Management (MEM) program, as well as an online MS in Mechanical Engineering program. New Mexico Tech’s online MS in Mechanical Engineering program features specializations in: Explosives Engineering; Fluid and Thermal Sciences; Mechatronics Systems Engineering; and Solid Mechanics.
Oklahoma State University offers two online master’s in electrical engineering programs through its College of Engineering, Architecture, and Technology: an online Master of Engineering (MEng) in Electrical Engineering program with an applied focus that is designed for engineering professionals; and an online Master of Science (MS) in Electrical Engineering program with a more theoretical focus that is designed for students who may want to pursue doctoral level studies in engineering. Colorado State University (CSU) is another public university in an adjacent state offering online master’s in engineering programs that New Mexico residents may want to explore. CSU’s online engineering programs include: an online Master of Engineering (MEng) in Engineering Management program; an online MEng in Mechanical Engineering program that gives students the option of taking elective courses in Manufacturing, Metals and Alloys, Composite Materials, and Mechanical Design; and an online Electrical Engineering program that has an MS degree track and an MEng degree track. Online Master’s in Nursing (MSN) Programs in New Mexico
Registered Nurses (RNs) who are interested in earning a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree in New Mexico have several online options for pursuing an MSN degree in state. New Mexico State University (NMSU) offers an online MSN program for RNs who hold a bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN). Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) offers an online MSN program with a Nurse Educator specialization that is designed to prepare RNs to become nursing instructors at the associate and bachelor’s degree levels. Among the out-of-state schools in the New Mexico region that offer online MSN programs are several located in the neighboring state of Texas. The University of Houston’s College of Nursing has an online MSN program with a Nursing Administration specialization. The University of New Mexico (UNM) and the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech) are two schools in the state of New Mexico that offer online master’s programs in computer and information science fields. UNM has an online Master of Science (MS) in Computer Engineering program with a concentration in the Internet of Things (IoT) that is designed for students who hold a bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering. The 31-credit program has a four-course core curriculum covering topics in computer programming, networking, and machine learning, as well as electives in digital signal processing, cybersecurity, satellite communications, and cloud computing.
The Department of Computer Science & Engineering at New Mexico Tech also offers an online Master of Science in Computer Science (MSCS) program with a general computer science curriculum and an online MSCS program with a concentration in Information Technology (IT).
New Mexico residents who are interested in earning a master’s degree in computer or information science online may also want to explore several programs offered by schools in the neighboring states of Texas, Colorado, and Arizona. The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) has an online MS in Information Technology and Management (ITM) program with five concentrations: Enterprise Systems; Business Intelligence and Analytics; Cyber Security Management; IT Consulting and Services Management; and Healthcare Systems.
Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU), a private, non-profit school in the south-central Texas city of San Antonio, offers an online MS in Information Systems and Security (MS-ISS) program that provides training in database management, computer systems design and analysis, telecommunication and networking, and other advanced topics. The OLLU program is designed for students who have a bachelor’s degree in a technical field, although students who do not have sufficient technical training may be eligible for the program if they take an introductory IT course.
Colorado State University (CSU) offers three online programs in computer and information systems fields, including an online Master of Computer Science (MCS) program with a curriculum designed for students who are fluent in an object-oriented programming language and who have prior experience with software design, data structuring, and operating systems concepts. CSU also offers an online Master of Computer Information Systems (MCIS) program and an online MS in Computer Engineering program. The MCIS program focuses on business applications of computer technologies. The MS in Computer Engineering program is designed for engineering professionals and provides advanced training in computer system design, network programming, and Internet protocols.
Arizona State University (ASU) offers online master’s programs in computer science and IT. Through ASU Online, students can earn an MCS degree with a Cybersecurity concentration and take coursework in cryptography, mobile computing, large-scale data processing, data visualization, and machine learning. ASU also offers an online MS in IT program that focuses on the support and management of secure IT systems in business, engineering, education, and government.
Online Master’s in Public Administration (MPA) Programs in New Mexico
New Mexico residents who are interested in earning a master’s degree in public administration online do not currently have any in-state options. However, there are several schools in neighboring states offering online programs in this field that New Mexico residents may want to explore. For example, in Texas there are three public universities that have online Master of Public Administration (MPA) programs: the University of Texas at Arlington (UT Arlington); Sam Houston State University (SHSU); and Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA State).
UT Arlington’s online MPA program features coursework in urban research and analysis, public sector budgeting, non-profit organizations, and intergovernmental regulations. It can be completed in 24 months and includes an internship component that may be waived for students who have one year or more of prior work experience in public administration. SHSU’s online MPA program has an emergency and disaster management concentration and a flexible enrollment policy that allows students to complete the program’s 36 credits at their own pace. And SFA State offers a 36-credit online MPA program with a general public administration and management curriculum and an internship component.
There are two online master’s programs offered by Arizona State University (ASU) in public administration fields. Experienced public administration professionals can earn an MPA degree through ASU Online’s Executive MPA (EMPA) program, which is designed for students who have five to seven years of relevant prior work experience. The 30-credit program requires students to attend three short residencies: an orientation session in Phoenix at the start of the program; an executive session in Washington DC one year into the program; and a final session on campus in Phoenix for final project presentations. ASU also offers an online Master of Public Safety Administration and Leadership program that is similar to an MPA program and that does not require prior professional experience. The program has three concentrations: Emergency Medical Services; Executive Fire Administration; and Executive Police Administration.

Online Master’s in Physical Education and Coaching Programs in New Mexico
Eastern New Mexico State University (ENMU) is one of two schools in New Mexico that currently offer online master’s programs in physical education/coaching. The ENMU program is an online Master of Science (MS) in Physical Education program with a Sports Administration concentration. The 36-credit program, which can be completed entirely online or through a mix of online and campus-based classes, has a thesis track and a non-thesis track. The non-thesis track requires students to complete a capstone project, and both tracks give students the option of completing a credited sports administration internship.
The University of the Southwest (USW) has a 30-credit online MS in Health and Human Performance program with a curriculum that includes coursework in sports law, exercise science, nutrition, and sports psychology. Students in the program can earn their degree in as few as 12 months and have a choice of a Practical Application track, which has an internship requirement, and a Lecture and Theory track, which does not require an internship.
Among the out-of-state schools offering online master’s in physical education/coaching programs are two schools in the neighboring state of Colorado: Adams State University; and the University of Northern Colorado (UNC). The Department of Kinesiology at Adams State has an MS in Coaching program and a Master of Arts (MA) in Sport Management program. The online MS in Coaching program is designed to prepare students for careers in recreational, interscholastic, intercollegiate, and professional coaching. The online MA in Sport Management program has a curriculum that focuses on media relations, facilities operations, and event management for sports organizations. Both are 36-credit programs that can be completed in roughly two years. UNC offers a 30-credit online MA in Sport Coaching program that can be completed in five semesters and that includes a graduate internship in sport and exercise science.
