Online Master’s Degree Programs in New Jersey

The state of New Jersey is home to a number of public research universities, state colleges and universities, and private, non-profit colleges and universities that offer online master’s programs in a variety of popular fields. Residents of the state can earn master’s degrees in business administration and accounting, teaching and education, counseling and social work, computer science and engineering, nursing and biomedical science, and other areas of academic study and professional practice through in-state programs that offer all or most of their coursework online.

In addition, there are many colleges and universities in other states that offer online master’s programs in these and other fields that accept applicants from New Jersey. Schools That Offer Online Master’s Programs in New Jersey

The New Jersey system of higher education is administered by the state’s Office of the Secretary of Higher Education, which maintains a directory of state-funded colleges and universities. The system is comprised of 11 schools that offer master’s degree programs, including four public research universities (Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; Montclair State University; New Jersey Institute of Technology; and Rowan University), and seven state colleges and universities. Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey (Rutgers University), a public research university with campuses in New Brunswick, Piscataway, Newark, and Camden, is the largest of New Jersey’s state-funded schools. Among the 29 schools and colleges in the Rutgers system are Rutgers Business School, the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, the Rutgers Graduate School of Education, and schools of nursing, engineering, social work, and public health.

The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), the second largest public research university in the state, is located in Newark and includes several prominent academic divisions, including the Newark College of Engineering, the Ying Wu College of Computing Sciences, and the Martin Tuchman School of Management.

Rutgers University and the NJIT are just two of the publicly funded degree-granting institutions in New Jersey that offer online master’s programs. Regional Out-of-State Schools That Offer Online Master’s Programs

One of the advantages of online learning is that it does not require students to relocate or commute regularly to a school’s campus in order to earn a degree. Residents of New Jersey may be eligible to apply for admission to online master’s programs in a range of fields that are offered by schools throughout the US. This includes a number of colleges and universities with campuses in neighboring and nearby states. In Delaware, for example, the publicly funded University of Delaware has online master’s programs in business administration, education, statistics, cybersecurity, and several types of engineering that accept applicants from New Jersey.

In Pennsylvania, the University of Scranton and The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) are two schools that are active in offering online master’s programs. The University of Scranton, which is a private, non-profit university, offers online master’s programs in business administration, accounting, health administration, healthcare informatics, human resource management, and finance. Penn State World Campus offers several dozen types of online master’s programs, including master’s programs in accounting, business administration, criminal justice, data analytics, educational leadership, finance, health administration, homeland security, public administration, and software engineering.

Utica College and Syracuse University are two schools in New York that offer various types of master’s programs online. The 100% online programs offered by Syracuse University include master’s programs in data science, computer engineering and computer science, electrical engineering, and information management. There are also several online master’s programs offered by Syracuse University that require students to attend a limited number of campus residencies, including a master’s in business administration program, a master’s in communication program, and a master’s in library and information science program. Utica College offers online master’s programs in business administration, cybersecurity, data science, and healthcare administration.

Online Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) Programs in New Jersey

Rutgers University is one of a number of schools in New Jersey that offer online MBA programs. The Rutgers online MBA program does not require students to attend campus-based sessions and has flexible enrollment options that allow students to take classes year-round on a part-time or a full-time basis. Students in the Rutgers MBA program can choose from four specializations: Business Analytics; Digital Marketing; Investments & Private Wealth Management; and Strategic Leadership.

Several other public universities in New Jersey offer online MBA programs, including Montclair State University, Rowan University, Thomas Edison State University (TESU), and the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). The Feliciano School of Business at Montclair State University offers an online MBA program with four concentrations: Digital Marketing; Human Resource Management; Marketing; and Project Management. Rowan University’s online MBA program has a general business administration curriculum that allows students to take several elective courses in subjects like electronic commerce, human resource management, and corporate entrepreneurship. The online MBA program offered by TESU has six specialization tracks: Accounting; Data Analytics; Finance; Healthcare Management; Human Resource Management; and Marketing. And NJIT’s online MBA program has three options for specialization: Management Information Systems; Marketing; and Finance.

Among the private, non-profit schools in New Jersey that currently offer online MBA programs are Seton Hall University, Stevens Institute of Technology, Rider University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Georgian Court University, and Caldwell University. Seton Hall’s Stillman School of Business has an online MBA with specializations in Accounting, Finance, and Marketing. The School of Business at Stevens Institute of Technology offers an online MBA with a curriculum that emphasizes business analytics and business IT systems. The Rider University online MBA program has a 12-month track for full-time students and a 21-month track for part-time students. Farleigh Dickinson’s online MBA program includes specialized coursework in sustainability management and social media marketing strategies. Georgian Court University has an online MBA program that gives students the option of a Healthcare Management concentration. And Caldwell University offers an online MBA program with a general business curriculum that can be completed in as few as 12 months of year-round enrollment.

New Jersey residents who are interested in out-of-state options for earning an MBA degree online may want to explore the programs offered by the University of Delaware, Utica College, the University of Scranton, and The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State). The University of Delaware’s Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics offers an online MBA program that can be completed 100% online or in a hybrid format that allows students to take some of their courses on campus. The program has five designated specializations: Business Analytics; Finance; Healthcare; Strategic Leadership; and International Business. Students in the program may also opt to customize their degree through elective coursework.

The Utica College online MBA program allows students to choose between taking all of their courses online or mixing online coursework with on-campus classes. Utica MBA students can choose from seven designated specializations: Finance/Accounting; Insurance & Risk Management; Cybersecurity; Cyber Policy; Data Analytics; Entrepreneurship; and Healthcare Management.

The online MBA program offered by the University of Scranton features seven specialization options: Accounting; Enterprise Resource Planning; Finance; Healthcare Management; Human Resources; International Business; and Operations Management. And the Penn State World Campus online MBA program, which includes a required five-day residency at Penn State’s University Park campus, has 13 concentration options: Accounting Foundations; Advanced Accounting; Business Analytics; Business Architecture; Business Sustainability Strategy; Corporate Innovation & Entrepreneurship; Finance; General Management; Human Resource Management; Marketing Analytics; Negotiation & Influence; Project Management; and Supply Chain Management.

Online Master’s in Social Work (MSW) Programs in New Jersey

The Rutgers University School of Social Work offers a fully online MSW program with a clinical social work specialization. The program is designed for part-time enrollment. Students can complete the program requirements by taking classes and completing field education hours year round, during fall, spring, and summer sessions. Graduates from bachelor’s in social work (BSW) programs that are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) may be eligible for Rutgers’s Advanced Standing MSW program, which can be completed by qualified applicants in one year of full-time enrollment. In addition, students in the Rutgers online MSW program can opt to earn a Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) certificate as part of their degree.

While there are currently no other schools in the New Jersey system of higher education that offer an online MSW program, Montclair State University has an online Master of Arts (MA) in Child Advocacy and Policy that is designed to prepare students for work in child welfare agencies and social service organizations that specialize in youth mentoring, domestic violence prevention, and youth education and advocacy. The program includes coursework in substance abuse, family crisis, family empowerment models, and child welfare advocacy and policy. However, the program is not CSWE accredited and does not include a field education component, which is an integral part of training for a career in social work.

Outside of New Jersey, there are several regional schools offering online MSW programs that New Jersey residents may want to explore. Simmons University in Massachusetts offers an online MSW program with a clinical social work curriculum and four areas of specialization: Child & Family; Trauma & Interpersonal Violence; Health & Aging; and Mental Health & Addictions. The Simmons program has three enrollment tracks: accelerated (15 months); full-time (23 months); and extended (32 months).

Fordham University in New York and Widener University in Pennsylvania are two of the other schools in the New Jersey region that offer online MSW programs. Fordham’s Graduate School of Social Service has an online MSW program with four specializations: Individuals & Families; Organizations & Community; Evaluation; and Policy Practice & Advocacy. The program has a traditional enrollment plan that can be completed in 16, 24, or 32 months depending on the number of credits earned per term, and an Advanced Standing program that can be completed in as few as 12 months.

Widener University in Pennsylvania has a trauma-focused online MSW program that is designed for part-time enrollment. Students who hold a bachelor’s degree in a field other than social work can complete the Widener online MSW program in roughly three years. Students who hold a BSW degree from a CSWE-accredited undergraduate program can complete Widener’s Advanced Standing MSW program in two years.

Note: New Jersey residents who are considering online MSW programs offered by out-of-state schools should be aware that they will have to complete field education hours in-person at a site approved by the program. They should also be aware that licensing requirements for clinical social workers vary by state. Thus, it is advisable to examine New Jersey licensing requirements and to discuss the options for field education placements with a program administrator prior to applying to an out-of-state online MSW program.

Online Master’s in Education and Teaching Programs in New Jersey

Teachers and educators in New Jersey have many options for furthering their educational and career goals through earning a master’s degree online in various specializations, including special education, reading education, educational leadership, higher education, and classroom technologies. Rutgers University offers an online Master of Education (MEd) in Adult and Continuing Education program and an online MEd in Language Education program. Montclair State University has a Master of Arts (MA) in Educational Leadership program that is offered 100% online and in a hybrid format that includes some campus-based classes. Rowan University offers an online MA in Reading Education program with a Reading Practitioner track and an online MA in Special Education program with an Autism Spectrum Disorders track and a Learning Disabilities track. Rowan also offers an online MEd in Teacher Leadership program that is designed for teachers who hold a NJ Standard or CEAS teaching certification.

Kean University, Thomas Edison State University (TESU), Monmouth University, Saint Peter’s University, and Caldwell University are some of the other schools in New Jersey that offer online master’s programs in teaching and education. Kean’s Nathan Weiss Graduate College offers an online MA in Educational Administration that has tracks for school principals, school supervisors, and school business administrators. TESU offers an online MA in Educational Leadership with three specialization options: Building Leadership; District Leadership; and School Business Administration. Monmouth has an online MEd program with a Pre-School Through 3rd Grade (P-3) focus and an English as a Second Language (ESL) focus. And both Saint Peter’s University and Caldwell University offer online Master of Higher Education programs.

The University of Delaware and The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) are two schools in the New Jersey region that offer online master’s programs in teaching and education. There are three online MEd programs offered by the University of Delaware that New Jersey residents may want to explore: an Exceptional Children and Youth MEd program; a Literacy MEd program; and a Teacher Leadership MEd program. These programs are designed for teachers who have experience in the field and may require applicants to hold a teaching certificate.

Among the many online master’s programs offered by Penn State World Campus are several MEd programs. The school offers and online MEd in Curriculum & Instruction program with five focus areas: Children’s Literature; STEM Education; Elementary Education; Curriculum & Supervision; and Theory & Practice in English, Social Studies, and World Languages. Penn State World Campus also has an online MEd in Educational Leadership program and an online MEd in Learning, Design, & Technology program.

Note: Due to the fact that the requirements for teacher licensure and certification vary by state, New Jersey residents should research admissions eligibility criteria carefully prior to applying to an online master’s program offered by an out-of-state school. Similarly, students who intend to apply for licensure and/or certification upon graduating from an online master’s program should research New Jersey state requirements in advance of submitting applications to out-of-state online programs. Finally, some online master’s in education and teaching programs require applicants to hold a state-issued teaching certification.

Online Master’s in Computer Science and Information Technology Programs in New Jersey

There are several types of online master’s degree programs in computer science and information technology offered by colleges and universities in New Jersey. The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) offers an online Master of Science (MS) in Computer Science through its Yin Wu College of Computing Sciences. The program features three designated specializations: Database & Data Mining; Cybersecurity; and Networking. Students who do not have a background in computer science and/or a degree in a STEM field may be eligible for NJIT’s Fast Track to Computing bridge program, which consists of four foundational computer science classes.

Kean University offers an MS in Computer Information Systems program that includes core coursework in software engineering, data science, cybersecurity, and machine learning. The program can be completed online or on campus and requires applicants to hold a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field.

Stevens Institute of Technology offers an MS in Information Systems through its School of Business and an MS in Software Engineering through its School of Systems & Enterprises. Both programs are offered online. Montclair State University has an online MS in Information Technology (MSIT) program designed for students with degrees and/or professional experience in computer science, mathematics, or engineering. Applicants to the Montclair State University MSIT program who do not have a technical background may be eligible for the school’s CSIT Bootcamp, which features four preparatory courses in computer programming, computer systems, and data structures.

Thomas Edison State University (TESU) offers an online MS in Information Systems program that focuses on application development, database design, and operating systems development. And Rutgers has a Master of Information program with four concentrations that are offered online: Library & Information Science; Data Science; Technology, Information, & Management; and Archives & Preservation.

Regional out-of-state schools that offer online master’s in computer science programs include Syracuse University and The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State). The College of Engineering & Computer Science at Syracuse offers an online MS in Computer Science program and an online MS in Computer Engineering program. The MS in Computer Science program curriculum focuses on structured programming, computer architecture, and operating systems. The MS in Computer Engineering program features coursework in computer architecture but has a stronger focus on computer and Internet security systems and data structures and algorithms. Penn State World Campus offers an online Master of Software Engineering program that focuses on software systems design, architecture, testing, and project management.

Online Master’s in Accounting Programs in New Jersey

There are several schools in New Jersey that offer online master’s in accounting degree programs. The Rutgers School of Business has an online Master of Accountancy in Government Accounting that is designed to prepare students for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam and for work in the public sector. Seton Hall University has two types of accounting master’s programs that it offers online: a Master of Science (MS) in Accounting that is designed for students who have an undergraduate degree in business but not accounting; and an MS in Professional Accounting that requires applicants to hold a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Both programs fulfill New Jersey’s educational requirements for CPA licensure.

Rider University and Farleigh Dickinson University are two additional schools in New Jersey that offer online master’s in accounting programs. Rider’s online Master of Accountancy program offers students the option of progressing through the program’s curriculum as part of 16-month cohort or at their own pace. Farleigh Dickinson has an online MS in Accounting program that is designed to accommodate students who do not hold an undergraduate degree in accounting and that can be completed in roughly two years.

New Jersey residents may also want to consider the online master’s in accounting programs offered by two schools in Pennsylvania: the University of Scranton and The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State). The University of Scranton offers an online Master of Accountancy (MAcc) program that can be completed in ten months of full-time enrollment or 20 months of part-time enrollment by students who hold a bachelor’s degree in accounting. For students who do not hold a bachelor’s in accounting degree, the University of Scranton offers an Accounting Bridge program comprised of five preparatory courses. Penn State World Campus has an online Master of Professional Accounting program consisting of ten courses. The program is designed for students who majored in business or accounting as undergraduates.

Note: Students who intend to qualify for CPA licensure after graduating from an online master’s in accounting program should be aware that eligibility requirements vary by state and the requirements in New Jersey may differ from those in other states. To ensure that an online program offered by an out-of-state school meets the academic training requirements for CPA licensure in New Jersey, potential applicants should familiarize themselves with New Jersey’s requirements and compare those requirements to program curricula.

Online Master’s in Public Administration (MPA) Programs in New Jersey

Seton Hall University and Rutgers University are two schools in New Jersey that offer online MPA programs. The Department of Political Science and Public Affairs at Seton Hall University has an online MPA in Non-Profit Management program that can be completed in less than three years of part-time enrollment. The Rutgers University online MPA program offers students the option of four concentrations: Budgeting & Financial Management; Healthcare Administration; Non-Profit Management; and Public & Non-Profit Performance Management. Both programs are offered 100% online and do not require students to attend campus-based sessions.

There are several out-of-state schools in the New Jersey region that offer online MPA programs, including the University of New Haven in Connecticut and Anna Maria College in Massachusetts. The program offered by the University of New Haven has three concentrations: Fire Administration; Municipal Management; and Non-Profit Management. It can be completed entirely online in less than two years. The online MPA program offered by Anna Maria College has a general public administration track as well as four concentrations: Criminal Justice; Emergency Management; Fire & Emergency Services; and Homeland Security. Students can complete the Anna Maria College online MPA program in two years.

Online Master’s in Counseling Programs in New Jersey

Currently, Seton Hall University is the only school in New Jersey that offers a fully online and accredited master’s in counseling program. The Seton Hall program is a Master of Arts (MA) in School Counseling and it is offered through the school’s College of Education and Human Services and its Department of Professional Psychology and Family Therapy. The program, which is approved by the New Jersey Department of Education and accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), uses a cohort model, which means that students progress through the program in groups and graduate in two to two-and-a-half years. The program culminates with a practicum and internship experiences that must be completed in person at a site approved by the program.

New York University (NYU) and Lock Haven University are two schools in states bordering New Jersey that offer online master’s in counseling programs. NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development offers two types of online master’s in counseling programs through its Department of Applied Psychology: an MA in School Counseling; and an MA in Mental Health Counseling. The School Counseling program offers students the option of a concentration in bilingual school counseling, and both programs include a 100-hour practicum, 600 hours of internship experiences, and one in-person immersion session held on the NYU campus. Lock Haven University, which is part of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, offers an online Master of Science (MS) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling that does not require students to attend any campus-based sessions. However, the program does include a 100-hour practicum and 600 hours of internships that must be completed in person at a site approved by the program.

Note: In order to practice professionally, school and mental health counselors must be licensed by the state in which they practice. Licensing requirements for professional counselors vary by state. New Jersey residents who are considering out-of-state master’s in counseling programs and who intend to practice in the state of New Jersey should examine program curricula carefully to ensure that a program’s curriculum meets the state standards for licensure. Potential applicants to online master’s in counseling programs should also check with a program administrator regarding internship sites prior to submitting an application to ensure that a convenient location can be found.

Online Master’s in Engineering Programs in New Jersey

There are several different types of online master’s in engineering programs offered by schools in New Jersey, including master’s in engineering management programs, and master’s in civil, electrical, and industrial engineering programs. The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) offers online Master of Science (MS) programs in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Industrial Engineering. The Civil Engineering program has three specialization tracks: Construction Management; Transportation; and Structural Design & Construction. The Electrical Engineering program also has three tracks: Communication, Signal Processing, & Microwave; Power & Energy Systems; and Mechatronics. Applicants to NJIT’s online master’s in engineering programs who do not have a technical background may be eligible for an engineering bridge program designed to prepare students for graduate studies in engineering. NJIT also offers an MS in Engineering Management program that can be completed online.

Rowan University offers an online Master of Engineering Management program that is designed for students who have completed introductory undergraduate coursework in chemistry, physics, calculus, and statistics. Farleigh Dickinson University has an online MS in Electrical Engineering program with three tracks: Digital Signaling Processing & Communications; Computers; and Devices & Systems. And the Schaefer School of Engineering & Science at Stevens Institute of Technology offers an electrical engineering master’s program with two online options: Master of Engineering (MEng) in Electrical Engineering and MS in Electrical Engineering. The two options have slightly different curricular requirements and both include an optional graduate internship.

The University of Delaware offers an online MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering program and an online MS in Mechanical Engineering program that New Jersey residents may be interested in exploring. The Electrical and Computer Engineering program has a curriculum that focuses on IT systems, advanced wireless communication technologies, and cybersecurity strategies. The Mechanical Engineering program has a thesis track and a non-thesis track.

New Jersey residents may also want to explore the online MS in Electrical Engineering program offered by Syracuse University through the school’s College of Engineering and Computer Science, and/or the MS in Environmental Engineering offered by the University of New Haven through its Tagliatela College of Engineering.

Online Master’s in Biomedical Science Programs in New Jersey

Rutgers University is currently the only school in New Jersey offering an online master’s in a biomedical field. The Rutgers program is a Master of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering program that includes coursework in biomaterials, tissue engineering, biomechanics, biomedical imaging, bioinstrumentation, and neuroengineering. The program is designed for students who have completed undergraduate coursework in cell biology, physiology, and multivariate calculus. Students typically complete the program in two to three years.

Drexel University in Philadelphia offers several types of online programs through its Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Professional Studies. This includes an online Master of Science (MS) in Biomedicine and Entrepreneurship, an online MS in Biomedicine and Law, and an MS in Molecular Medicine. New Jersey residents who are interested in earning a master’s degree in biomedical science may also want to explore the online MS in Applied Biomedical Engineering offered by Johns Hopkins University (JHU). The JHU program is designed for students who have a strong science and mathematics background and who have completed undergraduate coursework in calculus, physics, chemistry, and biology.

Online Master’s in Nursing (MSN) Programs in New Jersey

Registered Nurses (RNs) who live in New Jersey have several options for earning an MSN degree online, including programs that have specializations in nursing administration, nursing education, and various Advance Practice (APRN)/Nurse Practitioner (NP) fields. Montclair State University offers an online MSN program with specializations in Nursing Administration, Nursing Education, and Clinical Research. The Montclair State program has pathways for RNs who hold a bachelor’s in nursing degree and for RNs who have a non-nursing undergraduate degree. Thomas Edison State University (TESU) has three MSN program specializations: Nurse Educator; Nursing Administration; and Nursing Informatics. The TESU programs are designed for RNs who hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.

Rowan University offers an online MSN program with two NP specializations: Adult Gerontology Acute Care (AGACNP) and Family (FNP). The Rowan program requires applicants to hold a BSN degree and an active and unencumbered RN license. Seton Hall University has two types of online MSN programs: an MSN in Health Systems Administration program; and an Adult Gerontology NP (AGNP) program. Seton Hall requires applicants to hold a BSN degree in addition to an active RN license. And Farleigh Dickinson University has an online MSN program with an FNP specialization and an online MSN in Nursing Education program.

For RNs in New Jersey who are interested in exploring out-of-state options for earning an MSN degree online, there are numerous options. Sacred Heart University in Connecticut has an MSN program that offers four specializations online: Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL); Nursing Management & Executive Leadership; Nursing Education; and FNP. Regis College in Massachusetts offers online MSN programs with the following specializations: Pediatric NP (PNP); FNP; Psychiatric Mental Health NP (PMHNP); Women’s Health NP (WHNP); and AGNP. And Simmons University, which is also in Massachusetts, offers an online MSN in FNP program.

Note: RNs who are considering online MSN programs offered by out-of-state schools should be aware that most programs require students to complete a certain number of in-person clinical hours at an approved site. Prior to applying to an online MSN program, it is advisable to contact the program about potential clinical sites to ensure that a convenient location can be found. In addition, nursing licensure requirements vary by state. RNs who are considering an online MSN degree through an out-of-state school and who intend to apply for specialized certification upon completion of the program should research the requirements for that certification in New Jersey to ensure that the program meets those requirements.
