Note: Some online master’s in education and teaching programs are designed to prepare students to apply for state-specific teaching certifications and licenses, while others are designed for students who are already licensed. Eligibility requirements for these professional credentials vary by state. For students interested in seeking initial licensure it is advisable to review Delaware’s teacher licensing and certification requirements prior to applying to an online program offered by an out-of-state school. Delaware residents should also be aware that some online master’s in teaching and education programs require internships at program-approved sites and should therefore contact out-of-state programs regarding student-teaching placements prior to submitting applications.

Online Master’s in Counseling Programs in Delaware

Currently, there are no online master’s in counseling programs offered by schools in Delaware. There are, however, several online master’s in counseling programs offered by schools in nearby states that Delaware residents may be interested in exploring. Requirements for licensing vary by state. It is thus advisable to review these requirements prior to applying to an online program, particularly if the program is offered by an out-of-state school. This can help to ensure that a program will meet Delaware’s counselor training requirements. In addition, potential applicants may want to contact a program administrator regarding clinical placements, particularly if a program is offered by an out-of-state school.

Online Master’s in Human Services and Social Work (MSW) Programs in Delaware

Advanced Standing students can complete the Delaware State program in two semesters (full-time) or three semesters (part-time).

Delaware residents may also want to explore online MSW programs offered by out-of-state schools in the region, such as the program offered by the School of Social Work at New Jersey’s Rutgers University. The Rutgers program is a clinical social work program with an optional Violence Against Women and Children certificate. It is designed to take three years for traditional students to complete and roughly half that time for students who are eligible for the program’s Advanced Standing track.

Another New Jersey school, Montclair State University, offers an online Master of Arts (MA) in Child Advocacy and Policy program that provides training for human services work in child welfare agencies and social service organizations that specialize in youth mentoring, domestic violence prevention, and youth education and advocacy. The program includes coursework in substance abuse, family crisis, family empowerment models, and child welfare advocacy and policy.

Note: MSW programs and some master’s in human services programs require students to complete field education hours at program-approved sites. Delaware residents who are considering programs offered by out-of-state schools may want to contact a program administrator in advance regarding potential field placements. It is also important to note that licensing requirements for clinical social workers vary by state. Delaware residents who are considering applying to an online MSW program with the aim of qualifying for eventual licensure should review Delaware’s licensing requirements prior to submitting an application.

And the University of Scranton offers an online Master of Accountancy (MAcc) program that includes a bridge program of introductory courses for students who do not hold an undergraduate degree in accounting.

Another program that Delaware residents may want to explore is the Rutgers University School of Business online Master of Accountancy (MAcc) in Government Accounting program. The program’s curriculum is designed to provide students with training and instruction in the specialized work that public sector and governmental agency accountants perform. Finally, Seton Hall University, which like Rutgers is located in New Jersey, has two online master’s in accounting programs: an online MS in Accounting program designed for students who have some business training but do not hold an undergraduate degree in accounting; and an MS in Professional Accounting that is designed specifically for students who hold a bachelor’s degree in accounting.

Note: Online master’s in accounting programs can help prepare students to sit for the CPA exam in most states. However, CPA eligibility requirements vary by state. Delaware residents who intend to apply for CPA licensure upon completion of an online master’s in accounting program offered by an out-of-state school should review Delaware’s eligibility requirements in advance in order to determine if a program’s curriculum aligns with state standards for CPA licensure.

Online Master’s in Nursing (MSN) Programs in Delaware

Registered Nurses (RNs) in Delaware can earn their Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree online from two schools located in the state: Delaware State University; and Wilmington University. Delaware State offers an online MSN program for RNs who hold a bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN). The program has two specialization options: Global Leadership; and Nursing Education. Both specializations have two-and-a-half-year completion plans. The Global Leadership specialization culminates with an applied capstone practicum in which RNs apply what they have learned to the practice of nursing leadership in a clinical or administrative setting; the Nursing Education specialization culminates with a supervised teaching practicum.

Wilmington University offers an online MSN program for RNs with a BSN degree that has a Nursing Leadership focus and four leadership specialization options: Nurse Executive; Nurse Educator; Legal Nurse Consultant; and Public Health Nursing. The Nursing Leadership program requires students to complete clinical hours at a program-approved site and is designed to be completed within three years, although students are given up to five years to finish the program. Wilmington also offers an online Nurse Practitioner (NP) MSN program with two specializations: Adult-Gerontology NP (AGNP); and Family NP (FNP). The NP specializations can be completed in three years and allow students to spend up to five years earning their degree. In addition to online coursework, the NP specializations include a limited number of lab sessions and in-person clinical hours that must be completed at program-approved sites.

The George Washington University (GW) in Washington DC is among the out-of-state schools in the Delaware region that offer online MSN programs. GW offers an online MSN in Nursing Leadership and Management program, as well as an NP MSN program with four specializations: Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP (AGACNP); Adult-Gerontology Primary Care (AGPCNP); FNP; and Psychiatric Mental Health NP (PMHNP). The online Nurse Leadership and Management program does not require any campus visits; the NP specialization programs require students to attend a limited number of campus sessions at GW’s Washington DC campus. GW’s School of Nursing also offers a mostly online MSN in Nurse-Midwifery program that requires campus visits. All of GWU’s online MSN program specializations are structured to accommodate RNs who hold a BSN degree. However, GW’s AGPCNP, FNP, and Nurse-Midwifery specializations have RN-to-MSN tracks that are designed for RNs who hold an associate degree in nursing (ADN) rather than a BSN.

Finally, New Jersey’s Montclair State University has an online MSN program with Nursing Administration, Nursing Education, and Clinical Research specializations. The Montclair State program is designed to accommodate RNs who hold a BSN degree, as well as RNs who have a non-nursing undergraduate degree and thus require additional bachelor’s-level nursing coursework prior to enrolling in a master’s-level courses.

Note: Online MSN programs require students to complete clinical rotations at sites approved by the program. Prior to applying to an online program, especially a program offered by an out-of-state school, it may be advisable to contact a program representative regarding potential clinical placements. RNs who intend to become NPs or enter other advanced practice clinical nursing fields upon completion of an online MSN program typically must apply for state licensure. Eligibility requirements for licensure in nursing vary by state. Thus, students should review Delaware’s requirements prior to applying to an online program offered by an out-of-state school.
