Online Master’s in Education Programs in Wyoming

Teachers and educators in the state of Wyoming can explore several options for earning a master’s degree online through the University of Wyoming (UW), which offers online master’s programs in higher education administration, educational leadership, special education, and educational technology. The School of Counseling, Leadership, Advocacy, and Design at the UW, for example, has an online Master of Arts (MA) in Higher Education Administration program that is designed to prepare students for leadership positions in adult and postsecondary education, as well as an online MA in Educational Leadership program for K-12 teachers who have two or more years of classroom experience. UW also offers an online MA in Special Education program that is designed for licensed teachers and that requires students to attend several on-campus intensives, as well as an online Master of Science (MS) in Learning, Design, and Technology program that does not have any campus-based requirements. Applicants to the Learning, Design, and Technology program are not required to hold a teaching license.

Outside of Wyoming, there are regional schools that offer online master’s in education and teaching programs, including the University of Idaho, the University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver), and Utah State University (USU). Among the education degree programs offered by the University of Idaho are online Master of Education (MEd) programs in the following specializations: Educational Leadership; Curriculum and Instruction; Physical Education; and Special Education. Potential applicants may want to contact a program administrator prior to applying to an online program regarding potential sites for these in-person requirements. Wyoming residents should also be aware that licensing requirement for teachers and other types of educators vary by state. Therefore, Wyoming residents should review the state’s licensing requirements prior to applying to online master’s programs offered by out-of-state schools, particularly programs that are designed to lead to licensure and/or professional certification, to ensure that a program provides the training required by Wyoming.

Online Master’s in Social Work (MSW) Programs in Wyoming

While the University of Wyoming has a Master of Social Work (MSW) program that blends online and campus-based instruction, requiring several weekend-long intensives per semester, there are currently no fully online MSW programs offered by schools in Wyoming. There are, however, several of out-of-state schools in the Wyoming region that offer online MSW programs and that accept applicants who reside in Wyoming.

Idaho’s Boise State University has an online MSW program with an advanced generalist curriculum that provides training in clinical and macro practice social work. The program has a traditional track that takes six semesters to complete, and a three-semester Advanced Standing track that is open to students who hold a bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW) from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). The traditional track requires students to complete 1000 hours of field education; the Advanced Standing track has a 600-hour field education requirement.

Colorado State University (CSU) has a partially online MSW program that offers most of its didactic coursework online but that requires students to attend two weekend sessions per semester at CSU’s Fort Collins campus. The program has an advanced generalist curriculum, a three-year traditional track, and a two-year Advanced Standing track for graduates from CSWE-accredited BSW programs.

Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSU Denver) offers an MSW program with a flexible format, allowing students to attend daytime or evening campus-based classes, take courses online, or enroll in a combination of the two. The program has an advanced generalist curriculum, a two-year track for traditional students, and a one-year Advanced Standing track.

In addition, the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Denver (DU) has an online MSW program with two designated concentrations: Mental Health and Trauma; and Health and Wellness. The Mental Health and Trauma curriculum focuses on clinical social work practice, while the Health and Wellness concentration provides training and instruction in macro practice social work. The DU program has a traditional track with 27-month and 21-month completion plans, and an Advanced Standing track that can be completed in as few as 18 months.

Note: Students who enroll in an online MSW program receive all or most of their didactic instruction through online learning platforms but must complete field education hours in person at sites approved by the program. Wyoming residents who are considering programs offered by out-of-state schools may want to contact a program administrator regarding field placements prior to initiating the application process. Students who intend to apply for a state license to practice clinical social work upon completion of an online MSW program should be aware that licensing requirements vary by state. For this reason, residents should review Wyoming licensing requirements prior to applying to an online program offered by an out-of-state school in order to ensure that the program’s curriculum fulfills Wyoming’s academic training requirements for licensure in clinical social work.

Nebraska’s Bellevue University offers an online Master of Science in Accounting (MSA) program with concentrations in Finance and Taxation. The 36-credit online MSA program includes an accounting internship that must take place at a site approved by the program. Finally, Idaho’s Boise State University has an online Master of Science in Accountancy (MSA) program that can be completed in as few as 12 months by full-time students and 22 months by students who enroll part-time. The program has a track designed for students who have a bachelor’s degree in accounting or at least 18 credit-hours of undergraduate coursework in accounting and 15 credit-hours of undergraduate business coursework, as well as a track that requires students to complete undergraduate prerequisites prior to enrolling in master’s-level coursework.

Note: Earning a master’s degree in accounting is one way to qualify to sit for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam. Students who intend to apply for a CPA license after completing an online master’s in accounting program should be aware that eligibility requirements vary by state. In order to ensure that a program will provide the training needed for licensure, students should review Wyoming’s CPA eligibility requirements carefully prior to applying to a program, particularly if the program is offered by an out-of-state school.
