Note: Online master’s in education and teaching programs may require applicants to hold a teaching license or certification or may be designed to prepare students for licensure upon graduation. Due to the fact that licensure requirements vary by state, North Dakota residents who intend to apply for a teaching license after earning a master’s degree through an online program should review the state’s eligibility requirements carefully, particularly when exploring programs offered by out-of-state schools. It is also important to note that some but not all online master’s in education and teaching programs require internships at schools and other educational institutions that must be approved by the program. Students should contact programs about the placement process before applying to programs offered by colleges and universities outside of their local area.

Online Master’s in Social Work (MSW) Programs in North Dakota

There is currently one school in North Dakota that has an online Master of Social Work (MSW) program: the University of North Dakota (UND). The online MSW program offered by UND is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and provides students with an advanced generalist curriculum that includes training in clinical and macro practice social work. UND gives students the option of attending all of their courses online or enrolling in some campus-based classes, depending on an individual’s preference. However, all students in the program must complete in-person field education hours at sites approved by the program. The program has two tracks: a two- to three-year track for students who do not have prior training in social work; and a one- to two-year track for students who hold a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree from a CSWE-accredited undergraduate program.

Outside of North Dakota there are several schools in neighboring states that offer online MSW programs. The University of South Dakota (USD) has an online MSW program with an advanced generalist curriculum that provides training in the clinical delivery and administration of social work services to diverse communities in the Dakotas and other regional states. The program has a 60-credit traditional track for students who do not hold a BSW degree, and a 36-credit track for graduates from CSWE-accredited BSW programs. While all of the program’s coursework is offered online, students are required to complete in-person field education hours at social work sites approved by the program.

Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota (SMUMN) is another school in the North Dakota region that offers an online MSW program. The SMUMN program has a clinical social work curriculum and requires students to complete clinical field education hours at sites approved by the program. Students have the option of enrolling full-time in SMUMN’s online MSW program, which can lead to graduating in two years, or enrolling part-time, which typically leads to students graduating in three to four years. There is also an Advanced Standing track for students who hold a BSW degree from a CSWE-accredited undergraduate program. The Advanced Standing track takes one to two years to complete.

Note: Online MSW programs offer all or most of their didactic instruction via distance learning platforms. However, all MSW program require students to engage in field education, which means completing several hundred hours of fieldwork at clinical sites and/or social work agencies that align with a program’s curriculum. Applicants to out-of-state program should be aware of this requirement and may want to contact a program administrator regarding field placements prior to initiating the application process. In addition, licensing requirements for clinical social workers vary by state. For this reason, North Dakota residents who are considering online MSW programs in clinical social work that are offered by out-of-state schools should review North Dakota’s licensing requirements in advance to ensure that a program’s curriculum aligns with licensing requirements for clinical social workers in North Dakota.
