Out-of-State Schools That Offer Online Master’s Programs

One of the advantages of online degree programs is that they give students who cannot or would prefer not to move to another state access to programs offered by schools throughout the country. Online Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) and Management Programs in Alabama

There are numerous schools in Alabama that offer options for earning a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and/or a master’s in management degree online. The University of Alabama (UA), for example, offers an online Master of Arts (MA) in Management program with a global business focus and an online Master of Science (MS) in Operations Management program through its Culverhouse College of Business. Auburn University offers an online Master of Business Administration (MBA) program through its Raymond J. Harbert College of Business. The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Troy University, Jacksonville State University (JSU), Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM), and the University of West Alabama (UWA) also offer online MBA programs. The UAB program is offered through the Collat School of Business and features a general business track as well as specialization tracks in: Finance; Management Information Systems; Marketing; and Health Services. Troy University has a General Management MBA that it offers online, as well as online MBA programs in Leadership, Project Management, and Talent Development Training.

JSU offers an MBA program that can be completed entirely online or through a mix of campus-based evening and online classes. AUM has an online MBA program that can be completed in one year of full-time enrollment. And UWA has an online MBA program that can be completed in a little over a year and that features specialization tracks in: Accounting; Computer Information Systems; Entrepreneurship and Innovation; Finance; General Business; Management; Marketing; and Sports Management.

The Clayton State online MBA program offers specializations in: Accounting; Digital Marketing; Human Resource Leadership; International Business; and Supply Chain Management. USF’s Muma College of Business has an online MBA program with Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, and Compliance, Risk, and Anti-Money Laundering concentrations. And MTSU’s Jennings A. Online Master’s in Nursing (MSN) Programs in Alabama

Five of Alabama’s public universities offer online Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) programs. Registered Nurses (RNs) who would like to earn an MSN degree online in Alabama can choose from programs offered by The University of Alabama (UA), Troy University, Jacksonville State University (JSU), Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM), and the University of Southern Alabama.

UA offers an online MSN program with a Nurse Administrator track. Troy has an online MSN program with two specialization tracks: Healthcare Informatics and Nursing Leadership; and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). The program offered by JSU is an online MSN in Population Health program with concentrations in Emergency Management and Nursing Education. AUM offers an online MSN program with two tracks: FNP; and Nurse Educator for Interprofessional Practice.

The University of Southern Alabama has an online MSN program for RNs who hold a non-nursing bachelor’s degree (RN-to-MSN) and for RNs who hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. The MSN specializations offered online by the University of Southern Alabama include: Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP); Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP); FNP; Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP); Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (PACNP); Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (PPCNP); Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP); Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL); Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS); Executive Nursing Administration; and Nursing Informatics.

RNs in Alabama may also want to explore several online MSN programs offered by schools in Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida. Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), for example, offers an online MSN program with an FNP specialization, and the University of Memphis as an online MSN program with specializations in Nursing Education and Nurse Executive Leadership. The University of West Georgia has an online MSN program with three specialization tracks: CNL; Health Systems Leadership; and Nursing Education. And Florida’s Jacksonville University offers an online MSN program with specializations in Clinical Nurse Educator; Leadership in Healthcare Systems; and Nursing Informatics.

Note: Online MSN programs offer all or most of their didactic coursework online but typically require students to complete in-person clinical hours under the supervision of a qualified preceptor at a site approved by the program. Prior to applying to an online MSN program, particularly a program offered by an out-of-state school, RNs may want to contact a program administrator regarding potential clinical placements. In addition, RNs from Alabama who intend to apply for an advance practice nursing (APRN) license after completing an online MSN program should be aware that licensing requirements vary by state. As a result, an online program offered by an out-of-state school may or may not meet all of Alabama’s nursing licensure training requirements. Therefore, RNs should review Alabama’s APRN licensing requirements to ensure that a program provides the necessary training for licensure in Alabama.

Online Master’s in Social Work (MSW) Programs in Alabama

The University of Alabama (UA) and Troy University are two schools in Alabama that offer online Master of Social Work (MSW) programs. UTK’s online program is a CSWE-accredited Master of Science in Social Work (MSSW) program, which is similar in focus and curriculum to an MSW program. The UTK program give students the choice between a clinical practice specialization and a macro practice specialization, and it has an Advanced Standing track for BSW program graduates and a traditional track for students who hold bachelor’s degrees in other fields.

The University of Louisville also offers an online MSSW program with an Advanced Standing and a traditional track and five options for specialization: Psychosocial Oncology; Mental Health; Alcohol and Drug Counseling; Military Social Work; and Gerontology. Finally, FSU’s College of Social Work has a clinical MSW program that it offers online. The FSU program has a traditional track and an Advanced Standing track.

Note: Alabama residents who are considering online MSW programs offered by out-of-state schools should be aware of two potentially important factors: all CSWE-accredited MSW programs, regardless of their mode of instruction, require students to complete in-person field education hours at sites approved by the program; and licensing requirements for clinical social works vary by state. Prior to applying to an online MSW program offered by an out-of-state school, it may be advisable to contact a program administrator regarding field placements and to review Alabama’s licensing requirements for clinical social workers.
