Regional Out-of-State Schools That Offer Online Master’s Programs

Most schools admit out-of-state applicants to many of their online master’s programs regardless of where a student may reside, provided the student meets a program’s admissions requirements. This means that students in Washington can apply for admission to online master’s programs offered by colleges and universities located throughout the country, including a number of schools in neighboring and regional states. Oregon State University (OSU) is one such school. A state funded research university located in Corvallis, OSU offers online master’s programs in business, engineering, natural resource sciences, public health, public policy, teaching, and counseling through OSU Ecampus.

Boise State University in Idaho is another state-funded university in a neighboring state that offers a range of online programs. Among Boise State’s online programs are online master’s programs in business, education, nursing, and social work. Boise State also offers a number of specialized online master’s programs in fields such as respiratory care, genetic counseling, and accounting.

In the state of California there are a number of schools that offer online master’s programs, including the University of Southern California (USC), a private research institution in Los Angeles. Online Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) Programs in Washington

Washington State University (WSU) has two types of online master’s in business administration programs that it offers through its Carson School of Business: an online Master of Business Administration (MBA) program; and an online Executive MBA (EMBA) program. The MBA program is open to candidates who hold a bachelor’s degree and gives students a choice of four concentrations: Marketing; Finance; International Business; and Hospitality Business Management. The program also has an optional International Field Study component that consists of a weeklong study-abroad trip to Finland and Estonia. The EMBA program requires applicants to have a minimum of five years of professional management experience in a business field and does not have any specialization options. However, students in the Carson School’s EMBA program have an International Field Study option, which consists of a weeklong study-abroad trip to China.

Eastern Washington University (EWU) offers an online MBA program with a General Business curriculum and three additional specialization options: Accounting; Finance; and Global Business. Students who enter EWU’s online MBA program with an undergraduate degree in business can complete the program in as few as 11 months of full-time enrollment. Students who do not hold a bachelor’s degree in business typically must take several preparatory courses, which extends the time it takes to complete the program.

The Albers School of Business and Economics at Seattle University offers an online MBA program with a curriculum that stresses business leadership. The program requires students to attend a weekend residency retreat that begins at the school’s Seattle campus and then moves off-site for two days of workshops and other activities.

City University of Seattle offers an MBA program that can be completed online or through a mix of online and campus-based courses. The program gives students the choice of ten designated areas of emphasis: Public Accounting; Change Leadership; Entrepreneurship; Finance; Global Management; Global Marketing; Human Resource Management; Project Management; Supply Chain Management; and Technology Management.

Northeastern University of Seattle offers an online MBA program through the school’s Massachusetts-based D’Amore-McKim School of Business. The program has eight options for specialization: Finance; Healthcare Management; High Technology Management; Innovation Entrepreneurship; International Management; Marketing; Supply Chain Management; and Sustainability.

Among the many out-of-state schools that offer online MBA programs are three schools in regional states. Oregon State University (OSU) offers an online MBA program with four specialization tracks: Business Analytics; Marketing; Organizational Management; and Supply Chain and Logistics Management. Idaho’s Boise State University has an online MBA program that offers concentrations in Construction Management, Healthcare Leadership, and Management. Finally, the University of Southern California (USC) offers an online MBA program through its Marshall School of Business. The USC program prefers applicants who have some professional business experience and includes a one-week campus residency in Los Angeles at the start of the program.

Online Master’s in Social Work (MSW) Programs in Washington

While there are currently no schools in the state of Washington that offer fully online Master of Social Work (MSW) programs, Eastern Washington University (EWU) has several hybrid MSW programs that are designed to accommodate students who are working and would prefer a part-time, low-residency program. Through its Spokane campus, EWU offers a Part-Time Weekend Hybrid MSW program with a combination of online coursework and campus classes that meet on weekends three times per quarter. EWU’s Everett campus has a Part-Time Weeknight Hybrid MSW program with a three-year graduation plan that includes online coursework and on-campus classes that are held two evenings per week three times per quarter. Lastly, EWU’s Vancouver campus offers a similar Part-Time Weeknight Hybrid MSW program with online coursework and several campus-based classes each quarter held at Clark College in Vancouver. All three programs have an advanced generalist curriculum that provides training and instruction in clinical and macro practice social work, and all three programs have Advanced Standing tracks open to candidates who hold a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

For Washington residents who are interested in pursuing a MSW degree online, there are several regional out-of-state schools that offer online programs, including Boise State University in Idaho, and Portland State University in Oregon. Boise State’s College of Health Sciences offers an online MSW program with an advanced generalist curriculum that allows students to pursue training and instruction in clinical and/or macro practice social work. The program has an Advanced Standing track that is open to applicants who hold a BSW degree from a CSWE-accredited undergraduate program. Students in the Boise State program must complete 1000 hours of field education at a social work or social services agency; the Advanced Standing track requires 600 hours of field education. Portland State’s online MSW program has two concentrations: Practice and Leadership with Communities and Organizations (macro practice); and Health Across the Lifespan (clinical practice). The program has a three-year completion plan and a two-year Advanced Standing option for students who hold a BSW degree from a CSWE-accredited undergraduate program.

Note: Online MSW programs require students to complete in-person field education hours at social work organizations and agencies approved by the program. It is thus advisable for students who are considering an online MSW program to contact a program administrator regarding field placements prior to submitting an application, particularly if the program is offered by an out-of-state school. In addition, requirements for the licensing of clinical social workers vary by state. To ensure that an online MSW program offered by an out-of-state school will meet Washington State licensing requirements for clinical social workers, potential applicants should review the state licensing eligibility requirements carefully.

Online Master’s in Public Administration (MPA) Programs in Washington

The Evans School of Public Policy & Governance at the University of Washington (UW) offers an Executive Master of Public Administration (EMPA) program that utilizes some online instruction but that requires students to attend classes at the school’s Seattle campus. However, Washington residents can earn a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree online through Northeastern University Seattle, a satellite campus of a private, non-profit university based in Boston, MA. Northeastern University Seattle’s MPA program gives students the option of taking all of their courses online or attending some courses at the school’s Seattle campus. The program, which can be completed in as few as 18 months, consists of seven core courses, a required capstone project, and three electives that can be selected from course offerings in the program’s four concentration areas: Nonprofit Sector; Urban Analytics; Urban Studies; and Public Policy Analysis. Students new to the field of public administration may also be required to complete a 380-hour internship at an agency or organization that aligns with their area of study.

Washington residents who would like to explore the options for earning an MPA degree online through programs offered by out-of-state schools may want to consider the programs offered by the University of Southern California (USC) and the University of Idaho. USC’s Price School of Public Policy offers an online MPA program that can be completed in six semesters of full-time enrollment and that requires students to attend one residency session at the school’s Los Angeles campus. The University of Idaho has an online MPA program with a local government focus that does not require any campus visits but that does require students to complete an internship at a government agency or nonprofit organization approved by the program.

In addition to the online MPA programs offered by USC and the University of Idaho, Washington residents may be interested in two online programs offered by Oregon State University (OSU). OSU has an online Master of Public Policy (MPP) program and an online Executive MPP (EMPP) program. The public policy curriculum is similar to an MPA curriculum but focuses more on the scientific aspects of public policy (i.e., econometrics and social and behavioral theories and research) and less on managerial challenges related to administering public policy programs. The online MPP program offered by OSU requires the completion of 62 credits, while the online EMPP program is a 45-credit program that is designed for professionals who have a minimum of five years of experience in the public/nonprofit sector. Both programs offer concentrations in Energy Policy, Environmental Policy, Rural Policy, and Social Policy.

Note: Applicants to online MPA programs should be aware that some programs require students to complete internships at sites approved by the program. Washington residents who are considering online programs offered by out-of-state schools should contact a program administrator regarding internship placements prior to submitting an application.

Online Master’s in Education Programs in Washington

There are several schools in Washington that offer teachers and educators the option of earning a master’s degree in an education specialization online. Eastern Washington University (EWU), for example, has online Master of Education (MEd) programs in seven specializations: Adult Education; Curriculum & Instruction; Early Childhood Education; Educational Leadership; Educational Leadership (Principal Certification); Special Education; and Literacy. Applicants to the Curriculum & Instruction and Literacy programs are required to hold a teaching certificate. EWU’s other online MEd program specializations do not require applicants to hold a teaching certificate.

Central Washington University (CWU) is another publicly funded school in Washington that offers several types of online MEd programs, including an online MEd in Curriculum, Supervision, and Educational Leadership program with a Master Teacher specialization and a School Administration specialization. The Master Teacher specialization has a flexible curriculum that allows students to choose among numerous areas of emphasis, including but not limited to: Bilingual Education; Early Childhood Education; English/Language Arts; History/Social Science; Mathematics; Physical Education; Science Education; Special Education; and World Languages. The School Administration specialization has a track that can prepare students for Washington’s Residency Principal Certificate upon completion of a 12-month internship.

Both of CWU’s online MEd in Curriculum, Supervision, and Educational Leadership program specializations require applicants to hold a teaching credential, as does the university’s online MEd in Literacy program, which is designed to prepare students for Washington’s Endorsement in Reading certificate. CWU also offers an online MEd in Higher Education program that does not require applicants to hold a teaching license.

Washington State University (WSU) offers an online master’s in education program though its Global Campus initiative. The program is an online MEd in Special Education program designed to prepare certified teachers for the state endorsement required to teach K-12 special education students.

Gonzaga University, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, and City University of Seattle are among the private, non-profit schools in Washington that offer online master’s in education programs. Gonzaga has an online MEd in Educational Leadership program that requires applicants to have three or more years of professional experience teaching in a K-12 school. The program is offered in an accelerated format that allows students to graduate in four semesters.

Teachers who have a Washington teaching certificate can earn an MEd in Educating Non-Native English Speakers online from Seattle University. The Seattle University program begins with students completing the school’s English Language Learner Endorsement Academy program and then progressing to the English Language Learner master’s program, giving students the option of completing the endorsement portion of the curriculum prior to enrolling in the additional coursework required for the master’s degree.

Seattle Pacific University has an online Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program and an online MAT in Math and Science program, both of which are offered in an accelerated one-year completion format. The programs require students to engage in supervised teaching internships at schools in their region and both are designed to prepare students for certification in Washington.

There are several online MEd programs offered by City University of Seattle, including an online MEd in Educational Leadership program that has Principal and Program Administrator certification options. Washington residents may want to explore the options for earning an online master’s degree in an education field from two regional out-of-state schools: Boise State University in Idaho, and Oregon State University (OSU). Boise State offers an online MEd in Early and Special Education program, an online Master of Science (MS) in Educational Technology program, and online Master’s in Teaching (MIT) programs in Early Childhood Intervention and Special Education. Oregon State has two online MEd programs for students interested in pursuing careers in higher education: an online MEd in Adult and Higher Education program; and an online MEd in College Student Services Administration program.

Online Master’s in Nursing (MSN) Programs in Washington

Gonzaga University is the one school in Washington that currently offers an online master’s in nursing program. Gonzaga’s online Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program is designed to accommodate Registered Nurses (RNs) who hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree and RNs who hold a non-nursing bachelor’s degree. The program has a Nursing Leadership in Healthcare (NLH) track that takes an average of six semesters to complete and that requires students to attend one on-campus immersion session, as well as two Nurse Practitioner (NP) tracks: Family NP (FNP); and Psychiatric Mental Health NP (PMHNP). The NP tracks generally take nine semesters to complete and require 660 clinical hours at a site approved by the program.

RNs in Washington may also want to explore online MSN programs offered by out-of-state schools, including the programs offered by Boise State University in Idaho and Montana State University. Boise State has an online MSN program with an Adult-Gerontology NP (AGNP) specialization that accepts applicants who reside in Washington. The program requires students to attend three on-campus summer intensives and to complete four clinical rotations under the supervision of a preceptor approved by the program. Montana State has an online MSN program with a Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) specialization. Students in the program are required to travel to the university’s Bozeman campus at the start of each fall semester and to complete a clinical practicum and a professional project or research paper.

Note: Online MSN programs require students to complete clinical hours at program approved sites. Washington residents who are considering programs offered by an out-of-state school should contact program administrators regarding clinical placements to ensure that a convenient location can be found prior to submitting applications. In addition, RNs should be aware that licensing requirements for NPs and other Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) vary by state and may want to review Washington’s requirements prior to applying to an out-of-state online MSN program.

Online Master’s in Computer and Information Sciences Programs in Washington

There are several options for earning a master’s in a computer and information sciences field through online programs offered by schools in Washington. Washington State University (WSU) has an online Master of Science (MS) in Software Engineering program that can be completed in two years of full-time enrollment. The WSU program is designed for students who have a bachelor’s degree in computer science or industry experience in computer programming or software development.

Central Washington University (CWU) offers an online MS in Information Technology and Administrative Management (MS-ITAM) program with four specialization options: Administrative Management; Cybersecurity Management; Information Technology; and Data Analytics for IT Managers. The program has an accelerated track that can be completed in a year of full-time enrollment, as well as part-time enrollment options.

City University of Seattle offers an online MS in Computer Science (MSCS) program that consists of 12 required courses and a capstone project. The program is designed for students who have a technical background or degree in computer science. Students who do not have a computer science background can apply to the program and complete a four-course MSCS bridge program prior to enrolling in the program’s master’s-level curriculum.

Among the many out-of-state schools that offer online master’s programs in computer science and information technology fields are several programs offered by schools in nearby states. Stanford University in California offers an online MSCS program through its School of Engineering that typically takes between three and five years to complete. The program has five foundational course requirements that may be waived if students have completed college-level coursework in statistics, algorithmic analyses, computer systems, and computer programming. The program features specializations in: Artificial Intelligence; Biocomputation; Computer Network Security; Human-Computer Interaction; Information Management; Mobile and Internet Computing; Software Theory; Computer Systems; and Computer Science Theory.

The University of Southern California (USC) offers an online MSCS program that is designed for students who hold a bachelor’s degree in computer science and that has several specialization options, including Computer Security, Data Science, and Software Engineering. For students who do not have a computer science degree but hold a bachelor’s degree in a science or engineering field, USC offers an MSCS (Scientists and Engineers) program.

The University of Idaho has an online MSCS program that is designed for students who hold a bachelor’s degree in computer science. However, students who hold a bachelor’s degree in a field other than computer science are eligible for the program provided they take several preparatory courses. The program has a core curriculum and elective coursework that allows students to specialize in Cybersecurity, Survivable Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and Collaborative Virtual Environments.

Online Master’s in Counseling and Psychology Programs in Washington

There are two schools in Washington that offer online master’s programs in counseling and psychology fields. Northwest University offers an online Master of Arts (MA) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program through its College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The program, which takes three years to complete, requires students to attend three on-campus sessions and two internships at a clinical mental health counseling facility approved by the program. The program is designed to prepare students for clinical counseling licensure in the state of Washington.

The University of Washington (UW) offers an online master’s in applied behavioral analysis (ABA) program that is designed to prepare students to sit for the Behavior Analyst Certification Board exam and become licensed in Washington. Offered through UW’s College of Education, the program is an online Master of Education (MEd) in ABA program that has two- and three-year tracks and that requires students to complete a supervised practicum at a site approved by the program.

Washington residents who hold a bachelor’s degree may also be eligible for admission to several online master’s in counseling programs offered by schools in neighboring and regional states. Oregon State University (OSU) offers an online Master of Counseling program with a Clinical Mental Health Counseling specialization and a School Counseling specialization. While the OSU program is designated as an online program, it requires students to attend two weekend sessions per semester at OSU’s Wilsonville campus.

The University of Southern California (USC) offers an online MEd in School Counseling program that does not require any campus visits. The program’s curriculum is designed specifically to prepare students to apply for a school counseling license in California, although the program admits applicants from other states and provides out-of-state students who graduate from the program with a recommendation for a California Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) school counseling credential, which can be used to apply for a license in other states, including Washington. The program has three focus areas: College and Career Readiness; Restorative Justice; and Trauma Informed Practice. Students in the program must complete a school counseling internship at an educational facility approved by the program.

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) offers an online Master of Science (MS) in Educational Psychology program that is designed for teachers who want to enhance their classroom skills, students interest in pursuing a specialist or doctoral degree in educational psychology, and students who intend to apply the tools of educational psychology in business and governmental settings. The UNLV program has a thesis option and a capstone project option.

Note: Most online master’s in counseling programs and some online master’s in psychology programs require students to complete clinical hours at program-approved sites. Students should contact a program administrator regarding clinical placements prior to applying to a program, particularly if the program is offered by an out-of-state school. In addition, students should be aware that licensing requirements for counselors and psychologists vary by state. Those aiming to pursue licensure in Washington should review the state’s requirements prior to applying to out-of-state programs.

Online Master’s in Accounting Programs in Washington

City University of Seattle is currently the only school in Washington offering a fully online master’s in accounting program. The City University program is an online Master of Professional Accounting program with flexible enrollment, allowing students to take one, two, or three courses per quarter to complete a curriculum that includes concentrations in Public Accounting, Information Security Auditing, Finance, and Management Accounting. Students who begin the program without an undergraduate degree in accounting or business are required to complete 20 credits of prerequisite coursework in addition to the program’s 45-credit curriculum.

Boise State University and Sacramento State University are two schools in the Washington region that offer online master’s in accounting programs. Boise State has an online Master of Science in Accountancy (MSA) program that can be completed in 12 months of full-time enrollment or in 22 months of part-time enrollment. In order to qualify for Boise State’s online MSA program, students must first complete 18 semester credits in accounting and 15 semester credits in business. Sacramento State has a ten-course online MSA program that is designed for students who hold an undergraduate degree in accounting.

Note: While online master’s in accounting programs typically provide students with academic preparation for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam, eligibility requirements to sit for the exam vary by state. As a result, potential applicants to out-of-state programs should familiarize themselves with Washington’s CPA requirements prior to initiating the application process to ensure that a program’s curriculum aligns with CPA eligibility requirements in Washington.

Online Master’s in Organizational Leadership Programs in Washington

There are two schools in the state of Washington that offer online master’s in organizational leadership programs. Gonzaga University has an online Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership (MAOL) program with optional concentrations in Change Leadership, Global Leadership, Servant Leadership, and Strategic & Organizational Communication. The program requires students to attend one campus visit and can be completed in roughly two years. City University of Seattle offers an online Master of Science in Management and Leadership (MSML) program with an organizational leadership and management curriculum. The City University online MSML program gives students the choice of concentrations in Human Resource Management, Change Leadership, and Nonprofit Leadership. It can be completed in as few as 15 months.

Oregon’s Warner Pacific University is one school in a neighboring state that offers an online master’s in organizational leadership program. The Warner Pacific program is an online MS in Management (MSM) program with an Organizational Leadership concentration. The program consists of 12 six-week courses that can be completed in two years. Washington residents may also want to explore the online MAOL program offered by Brandman University, a private, non-profit school based in California that has campuses in Washington. Brandman’s program has seven core course requirements and a capstone project. It can be completed in one year.

Online Master’s in Civil Engineering and Engineering Management Programs in Washington

The University of Washington (UW) offers two Master of Science (MS) in Civil Engineering program specializations online: Construction Engineering; and Energy Infrastructure. Both specializations can be completed in two to three years and are designed for students who hold a bachelor’s degree in engineering, although the Energy Infrastructure program will accept candidates with an undergraduate degree in a STEM discipline, provided they have several years of professional experience in an energy-related field.

UW’s online MS in Civil Engineering: Construction Engineering program features coursework in construction law, construction logistics and operations management, and pavement and utility systems construction. The online Energy Infrastructure MS program includes coursework in geospatial information systems, electrical grids, renewable power systems, and environmental regulations. (UW also offers an online MS program in Mechanical Engineering, as well as an online Master of Pharmaceutical Bioengineering program and an online Master of Aerospace Engineering program.)

Washington State University (WSU) has an online Professional Science Master’s (PSM) in Electric Power Engineering program. Offered through WSU’s Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture, the PSM program is designed to provide students with technical training in power systems, renewable energy sources, and high voltage transmission lines, as well as professional development coursework in engineering management, decision analysis, and finance.

The School of Engineering & Applied Science at Gonzaga University offers an online Master of Engineering (MEng) in Transmission & Distribution Engineering program that focuses on energy systems, power grids, and transmission line design. The program includes an Engineering Leadership capstone project that requires students to attend an on-campus weekend immersion experience at Gonzaga. The program is designed for students who have an undergraduate degree in civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering and can be completed in two to three years.

Washington residents may want to consider the options for earning a master’s degree in engineering online from several schools in regional states, including Oregon State University (OSU), the University of Idaho, and the University of Southern California (USC). OSU offers an online MEng in Engineering Management program that is designed for professionals who have a background in a STEM field. The program features coursework in engineering project management, finance, strategic planning, and leadership, and it can be completed in two years by students who take two courses per semester. The University of Idaho offers an online MEng in Civil Engineering program that gives students the choice of four areas of emphasis: Environmental Engineering; Geotechnical Engineering; Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering; and Structural Engineering and Structural Mechanics. The program is designed for students who have a bachelor’s degree in civil or environmental engineering, although candidates with a technical engineering background may be considered for admission.

USC’s Viterbi School of Engineering offers online master’s programs in numerous engineering specializations, including civil and environmental engineering, and engineering management. The Viterbi School has an online MS in Civil Engineering program that offers designated tracks in Construction Engineering & Management and Structural Engineering, as well an online Master of Construction Management program and an online MS in Engineering Management program. USC’s online master’s in engineering programs are designed for students who hold an undergraduate degree in engineering or a related technical field.
