Campbellsville University Online Master of Arts in English

Campbellsville University (CU) offers an online Master of Arts (MA) in English program that can be completed in as few as 12 months with no campus visits. The Program is extremely flexible with only two required courses, and the choice of an Exit Exam or a Thesis and Oral Thesis Defense. In addition to the program’s flexibility, the curriculum is based on Christian values, and Campbellsville University offers very low tuition to both in-state and out-of-state residents.

The MA in English program delves into key skills at the graduate level, including reading, writing, literary criticism and analysis, critical thinking, and research. Students will learn to value, interpret, and practice creative thinking, artistry, and human expression through literature from various time periods, cultures, and authors. The program also helps students develop personally through self-reflection, self-expression, analytical thought, and the mastery of literary content and analysis. Students will be able to become competent scholarly writers, skilled communicators, analytical and critical readers, and graduate-level literary researchers.

The CU MA in English program comprises 30 credits and can be completed in as few as 12 months. Courses last eight weeks each and students may begin the program twice each in the fall, spring, and summer. Students may study full-time or part-time as best fits their current life responsibilities.

Online courses are delivered asynchronously. However, students have multiple opportunities to interact with faculty and peers in the interactive online system. Courses include reading, writing, critical analysis, literary research, and opportunities for improving communication. Graduates will be prepared for careers in journalism, editing and digital copywriting, high school and post-secondary education, and website management, or may go on to doctoral study.

Required courses for the online MA in English include Introduction to Graduate Studies and Composition Theory. Students then choose one course from Chaucer, British Literature 1550-1660, Shakespeare, or Milton; one course from British and American Literature 1660-1790, The English Novel 1660-1790, Romantic and Victorian Poets, Restoration and 18th Century Drama, or Victorian Fiction; and one course from Post-Colonial Literature, Postmodernism and Contemporary Literature, Maligned Modernism, Fragmented Modernism, or Politics and Literature. Students then choose two additional elective courses and a Written Exam, or Thesis 1-2 and an Oral Thesis Defense.
