New York University – Counseling@NYU Online Master of Arts in School Counseling
The Department of Applied Psychology at New York University offers an online master of arts in Counseling and Guidance degree. This MPCAC-accredited degree prepares students for school counseling in elementary, middle, and high schools. The cohort-based program offers several opportunities for students to practice learned skills and observe individual and group counseling environments.
Counseling@NYU students may opt to pursue a Bilingual School Counseling concentration, which prepares participants to help face common challenges of counseling English as a Second Language (ESL) students.
Counseling@NYU students participate in an online counseling lab with a partner with whom they role-play different counseling situations. This counseling lab prepares students for practicum and internship experiences.
In addition, students participate in an on-campus immersion in New York City for the course Group Dynamics: Theory and Practice. Through this immersion, students are exposed to and participate in sessions to better understand group dynamics and success. During the immersion experience, students practice counseling skills, complete their Dignity of All Students Act (DASA) training, and collaborate and connect in person with faculty and peers.
The MA in School Counseling courses are 100% online. Students are required to come to campus for the aforementioned immersion experience, and must also complete a practicum and internships. The program consists of 48 credits and can be completed in as little as 18 months. Cohorts begin in January, June, and September.
Counseling@NYU focuses on collaboration, interaction, and practice. Students participate in synchronous classes, an online lab with a classmate, a practicum, and internships. Courses are individually designed for maximum learning so each is interactive and dynamic. Students have access to an admissions counselor, support team, a student support advisor, student services, a field placement team, and career services.
Counseling@NYU courses may include Professional Orientation and Ethics for School Counseling; Individual Counseling: Theory and Process; Research and Evaluation Methods in Behavioral Sciences; Cross-Cultural Counseling; Human Growth and Development; Group Dynamics: Theory and Practice; Career Counseling; Assessment of Children and Adolescents; and Program Development and Evaluation in Counseling.
Bilingual School Counseling Courses include Child Language Development and Development of Immigrant Origin Youth. Electives may include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Theory and Application; Sexual Decision-Making and Risk-Taking Adolescence; Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders: Theory, Research, and Treatment; Child Language Development. The course Drug and Alcohol Education/School Violence/Child Abuse Recognition is also available as a non-credit course.
New York University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). The MA in Counseling degree is accredited by the Masters in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council (MPCAC).
