Syracuse University - Online Master of Science in Accounting

Accounting@Syracuse, the online Master of Science in Accounting program from Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University, offers a path for students to advance their accounting careers or transition into finance roles. Designed to prepare students to take the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam, the program covers topics such as international accounting, business strategy, management accounting, information management, auditing, cost analysis, taxation, and financial statement analysis.

Students in the MS in Accounting program can follow one of three accounting schedules: accelerated, professional, or foundational. The accelerated schedule requires the completion of 30 credits and can be completed in just 12 months. This pathway is designed for applicants with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and requires students to take more than two courses in two of the four terms of study. The professional accounting schedule, also for those with an accounting bachelor’s degree, comprises 30 credits and can be completed in 15 months by taking two courses in each of the five terms. Finally, the foundational accounting schedule comprises 33 to 48 credits and can be completed in 24 months or less depending on prior education. The foundational schedule is designed for students who do not have an accounting background. An individualized course plan will be determined upon admission and review of prior schooling.

Students may begin Accounting@Syracuse four times per year and courses are offered 100% online with no campus visits required. Syracuse University utilizes the Zoom HD video platform and courses include assessments, case studies, interactive content, and guest lectures. In addition, students meet in live, weekly in face-to-face classes with faculty and peers to discuss, collaborate, and learn. These sessions are also recorded for later reference and can be accessed on mobile devices.

All online students also receive a global membership to WeWork where they can complete classwork, hold study groups, and attend networking events. Finally, students have access to a multitude of services including Syracuse’s worldwide network of professionals, one-on-one coaching, career services, and 24/7 technical support.

Accounting@Syracuse comprises 30 credits for those with an accounting bachelor’s degree. Core courses include Advanced Topics in Auditing; Financial Statement Analysis; Taxes & Business Strategy; and International Accounting & Reporting. Electives include Accounting Analytics; Venture Capital; Principles of Fraud Examination; Corporate Financial Policy & Strategy; Project Management; and Supply Chain & Logistics Management.

For those with a non-accounting bachelor’s degree, Accounting@Syracuse comprises up to 48 credits and foundational courses may be completed prior to or during the completion of the MS degree. These courses include Financial Accounting; Cost Analysis & Control; Principles of Taxation; Intermediate Financial Accounting I-II; Managerial Accounting; Auditing Theory & Practice; and Advanced Financial Accounting.
