Sullivan University was founded in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1962 as Sullivan Business College. Its aim was to offer students a one year education program which would prepare them for careers in the business world.

The baccalaureate degree program was added in 1990, the MBA program in 1997 and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree was established in 2008. Several of these degree programs are available online through its Global e-Learning Division.
