A degree in Sociology will give you a background in empirical investigation and critical analysis pertaining to human social structure and activity.


This discipline can cover a wide range of subjects, as humans are active socially in many aspects of society. Therefore sociology can be found in studies of media, the internet, advertising or religion.

Often sociology is studied in the hopes of being able to better the overall social welfare. In this pursuit, it is not unusual for students to study social relations, deviance, social interaction and culture.

Sociology is such a broad discipline that there is bound to be something in it for everybody.

Degree Choices

BA, MA, PhD. An Undergraduate degree in Sociology can bring you a host of opportunities. You could work with the U.S. Census Bureau or the U.S. Bureau of Prisons; you could work with various Human Service organizations or in Public Relations. While you can enjoy many entry-level jobs in many different fields, there are even more opportunities for those holding a postgraduate degree.

With a Master's or a Doctorate, you could advance to higher management positions in one of the careers mentioned above or you could choose to teach sociology. Of course teaching may require additional courses in education, depending on whether you'll teach in the University or high schools.

As a student pursuing a Sociology degree, you will no doubt be required to take some of the following classes: Introductory Sociology, Race, Class and Gender, Sociological Theory, Quantitative Analysis, and probably some courses in Research methods- especially if you are in a Master's or Doctorate program.

Career and Salary Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (last updated May, 2009), a career in Sociology can garner anywhere from $61,000 to over $100,000. As you work more in the field and gain experience, this amount can increase substantially. Also, according to the same report, the growth rate for Sociology jobs is predicted to be 10% over the next decade.

The majority of the growth in the Anthropology industry will be in policy or research.
