Online Psychology Degree
Online Psychology DegreeA degree in psychology can give you a deeper understanding about how we perceive cognition, emotion, motivation, memory, personality and behavior. You will gain that knowledge based on the scientific method and critical analysis rather than simply by subjective observation.
As you delve into the subconscious realms of human thought and the other areas of human activity including family, education and employment, you will gain a wide perspective that will help you to treat patients who are experiencing various mental health problems.
With a degree in Psychology, there are a wide variety of settings where you could build your career. You could choose to work in hospitals, grade/high schools, universities, clinics, or you may choose to set up your own private practice.
Degree ChoicesCertificate, AA/AS, BA/BS, MA/MS, PhD, PsyD. Certificates and Undergraduate degrees can prepare you for many entry-level jobs in Psychology. You could get into Case Management or Career Counseling or you could become a Psychiatric Technician.
With a Master's or PhD, you can prepare yourself for a job as a therapist, a licensed psychologist, or (with some education classes) a school psychologist.
As the names imply, the degrees of science (AS, BS, MS, and all Doctorates) will require more math and science courses.
Some of the courses that may be required for a Psychology degree could include: Developmental Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Psychology of Learning and Memory and Brain and Behavior.
If you wish to become a therapist, Psychologist, or Psychiatrist or any practitioner who works one on one with patients, there is a very high probability that you will have to be certified by the state where you have your practice. There may also be some continuing education requirements built into the licensure.
Career and Salary OutlookAccording to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, those with a degree in Psychology enjoy an average salary of around $62,000.
The Bureau also reports that over the next decade, the growth rate for jobs in Psychology will rise to about 15%. It should be noted that a large portion of the jobs will be for those who have a Master's degree or a Doctorate; there are limited number of entry jobs in the Psychology field for candidates holding a Bachelor's.
