Physicists seemingly concern themselves with answering the biggest questions in the universe, wanting to know why and how it works from the smallest particles to planets, stars, and galaxies. You can, in turn, study physics as it relates to other disciplines such as biophysicists, astrophysicists, chemical physicists, and more.

You can earn a bachelors, masters, or doctoral degree in physics during which one might expect to encounter courses dealing in electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, just to name a few. While a bachelors degree will qualify many for work in entry-level positions as technicians or research assistants, most research, development, and teaching positions go to holders of graduate or post-graduate degrees.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics about 18,000 physicists held positions in 2006, many of whom held faculty positions at universities and colleges, large research laboratories, and observatories. Through 2016, demand for physicists and astronomers is expected to grow about 7-percent or similar to the average for all other occupations. Physicists earned a median income of about $94,000 in 2006; astronomers earned almost $96,000.
