Additionally, a graduate at the Master's level will have knowledge in: student development, diversity and multicultural issues, student services and legal issues. Most Master's programs take about two years to complete.

At the PhD level, you will be subjected to the same coursework as the Master's candidates, but will also have to complete courses in statistics, quantitative analysis and research methodology. At the end of the 3 to 6 year program, you will be asked to submit an original research project known as a Doctoral Thesis.

Career and Salary Outlook

The U.S. Department of Labor projects a 12% increase in the number of administrative job openings over the next decade. The two reasons given for this are the high number of enrollments at the college level and the expected high level of retirees.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the current average salary for postsecondary education administrators to be around $86,000. Of course, salaries can vary depending on the level of the position within the organization and the responsibilities expected of the position.
