Coursework will typically consist of integral subjects including textiles, fabric, ornamentation, sewing, design, plus others. You will also gain a familiarity with computer-aided design software.

Conversely, you could follow a retail management track wherein you will learn more about accounting, sales, human resources, operations, and more.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, fashion designers should expect slower than average career growth at 5-percent through 2016. Annual median salaries for fashion designers in 2006 were close to $63,000. Employment in textiles, apparel, and furnishings occupations is seen declining by 11-percent through 2016 so competition will likely be fierce.
