A career in environmental science may appeal to the rugged types who can spend days, weeks, or even months outside studying the environment and its various ecosystems. You can earn a bachelors or masters degree in environmental science at many online colleges and universities. A bachelors will be helpful in getting a recent graduate an entry-level position but most upper advancement and research opportunities go to those holding masters.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics about 92,000 environmental scientists and hydrologists held positions in 2006. Employment for each specialty is expected to grow at a faster-than-average 25-percent through 2016. Median earning for environmental scientists in 2006 was about $56,000; hydrologists earned over $66,000.
