After all, a curriculum is the blue print from which all of the students and teachers work and must only be changed or enhanced by those with sufficient background and knowledge of the intricate processes surrounding a sound curriculum.

The course work for a Curriculum and Instruction degree will encompass a wide range of subjects. In addition to the traditional training in education design (for both traditional and online classrooms), a person working on this degree must also be well versed in psychology, education administration, research design, evaluation techniques, analysis, training techniques (to be able to train the instructors) and educational technology. Additionally, it's not unusual for Curriculum designers to specialize in a particular learning area such as ESL or Mathematics, for example.

Career and Salary Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, curriculum designers earn an average salary of about $58,000. Another source, Salary.com, sets the average somewhat higher at a base salary of $61,109.

Need for Curriculum Designers between 2006 and 2016 is expected to grow as much as 22% over the next decade. As State and Federal standards continue to change and grow, there will always be a market for trained professionals to help schools meet the more stringent standards.
