Degree ChoicesBA, MA, PhD. Getting an Associate's or a Bachelor's in Counseling will be enough to get you in some entry positions (depending on which branch of Counseling you choose). However, social scientists are expected to be extremely well educated and so the best job prospects can be found at the PhD level.
For Bachelor degree candidates, some of the core coursework you will probably encounter in most Counseling programs include: Career Counseling, Theories of Counseling, Ethical and Professional Issues in Counseling, Applied Behavioral Psychology, Multicultural Counseling and the Psychology of Addiction.
When you are considering a degree in Counseling, you should be aware that most states and employers require licensure for counselors. In addition to licensure, many counseling programs require supervised clinical internships. Once you have established all of the criteria, you will often be required by state law to participate in continuing career education programs.
For the higher level degrees of Master's or PhD, the coursework will be specifically geared toward your chosen branch of Counseling.
Career and Salary OutlookAccording to the U.S. Department of Labor, depending on who you are counseling and where you are counseling, you can make anywhere from $30,000 to $60,000. The more advanced your degree, the more money you will be able to make. Also, as you work more in the field and gain experience, this amount can increase substantially. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the growth rate for counseling jobs is predicted to be 21% over the next decade. They go on to report that the most lucrative earnings seem to go toward those who are self-employed and have established their own private practices.
